Bradford Clean Air Zone will go live on the 26th September 2022

CAZ

The shift in launch date allows IT systems to be fully tested and businesses more time to use the Clean Air Zone funding available and upgrade their vehicles prior to the launch. It also provides Bradford district businesses and households more time to apply for local exemptions.

We have secured the highest level of funding for a CAZ of this type and is providing the most extensive exemptions programme of any CAZ in the UK.

The Bradford CAZ will be a class C + Clean Air Zone which means that commercial vehicles entering the CAZ will face a daily charge if they don’t meet the required emission standards.

To prepare for the launch anyone who feels they may be affected by the CAZ should check their vehicles on the Government website: www.gov.uk/clean-air-zones

This will let them know if their vehicle will be charged for driving in any of the UK Clean Air Zones, including Bradford.

Passenger cars and motorbikes will not be charged for entering the Bradford Clean Air Zone.

It doesn’t matter if you live outside the Bradford District or if you use your vehicle for work purposes.

Bradford householders can apply for an exemption if you own a non-compliant commercial type vehicle for private use (e.g. vans, campers, motorhomes and horseboxes), you will not have to pay.

Bradford businesses, are eligible for up to 3 vehicles being exempt so most businesses, as long as they apply, won’t have to pay. This includes self–employed and sole traders. They are also eligible for grants to help them upgrade.

Bradford Council marks Bike Week

bike week

We have been encouraging people to turn to pedal power for Bike Week (6-12 June) and to take advantage of all the bike-friendly measures in place across the district.

We have worked in partnership with BikeAway to install secure bike parking in Bradford city centre, following requests from the people for more facilities to store their bikes.

There are now 40 bike lockers across four locations: at John Street, Broadway, Glydegate Square and Rawson Place.

The space saving vertical design of the locker is roomy enough to accommodate most bikes without the need to remove the front wheel.  They offer a high level of security and have been awarded the Sold Secure Diamond Standard which is the highest level set for secure cycle storage.

40th anniversary of the end of the Falklands War

Cenotaph

A service commemorating the 40th anniversary of the end of the Falklands War will be held at Bradford’s Memorial Wall in the Cenotaph Gardens, Morley Street next week.

The service will start at 11am on Tuesday, 14 June and will be led by The Revd Canon Paul Maybury Acting Dean at Bradford Cathedral.

The Lord Mayor of Bradford Councillor Martin Love will host the event and will be supported by Group Leaders plus Falklands Veterans from SAMA 82 (South Atlantic Medals Association).

Lord Mayor of Bradford Cllr Martin Love said:  “This is a chance to support and respect our forces who were involved in the Falklands War. It is an opportunity for all of us to show our appreciation and remember the sacrifices made by the members of our Armed Forces during the Falklands War.  I hope people will join with us to reflect.”

Doe Park Water Activities Centre has sustainability make over

Doe park

Doe Park Water Activities Centre has had a sustainable make over to improve its energy efficiency and cut carbon emissions.

The project at the Council-run centre in Denholme was led by our Energy Management team and included adding a new building to the site, which will be accommodated by the energy saving measures now in place.

The existing building, known as Heron, contains classrooms, toilets, changing areas and drying rooms for kits. Before the work was carried out, the old hot water system had to be kept switched on for 24 hours a day to provide enough hot water for the site.

A new building management system (BMS) and domestic hot water system mean that this is no longer necessary. The BMS monitors use of heat and hot water so that it is only switched on when needed. The system can measure levels of humidity in the drying room and automatically switch off when the wet suits and other clothing are dry.

The domestic hot water system can now also be switched off for longer periods, as it has been upgraded to a modern recovering cylinder with smaller immersion heaters, which require less power. This means that the water takes around two hours to fully heat up, instead of having to be left on all the time.
