Flying the flag for Fairtrade Fortnight

Fairtrade Fortnight

We are joining local organisations to support this year's Fairtrade Fortnight – 21 February to 6 March – which will focus on supporting and protecting farmers and workers already being affected by climate change.

The annual campaign aims to raise awareness of the plight of farmers and producers of goods in countries where workers are affected by low pay, difficult work conditions, and, increasingly, climate change. Fairtrade seeks to campaign for social justice for those affected and buying products which display the Fairtrade logo means that customers are supporting farmers and workers to improve their lives and those of their communities.

Events are being held locally and online to mark Fairtrade Fortnight. The online event is the 'Choose the World you Want Festival' which will run throughout the fortnight and includes talks by farmers in countries supported by Fairtrade, discussions on topics such as Fairtrade fashion and the impact of climate change, storytelling, competitions, teaching and cooking demonstrations.

Council budget

Full Council met yesterday to set its budget for 2022-23.  Thank you to everyone who gave feedback through this consultation.

The budget marks the culmination of months of planning.  This budget means no new cuts to services and no new redundancies but focuses on delivery of services with the scope for new investment severely limited and previously agreed savings must continue to be delivered and Council tax must increase in line with the Government’s own assumptions.

It prioritises the delivery of key Council services and the realisation of ambition for the future. It is a lower than inflation increase in Council tax and avoids the need for new cuts and new redundancies. It enables the council to keep visible services going, care for our vulnerable adults and children and stay focussed on delivering key priorities for the residents of the district.

Bradford Council Localities Plan 2022-2025 engagement survey

We are running a localities engagement survey with the aim of finding out about what makes where you live a good place, and what strengths your community has. The results of the survey will be used to inform planning within your area for the next three years.

This survey forms part of the strengthening locality working programme at Bradford Council, within which we are aiming to focus the efforts of not only ourselves, but also our partners, communities and citizens, on how we can work together with more of a focus on individual localities within our District. This project is underpinned by the principles of three main approaches, the first two of which are early help and prevention, which are focused on stopping potential issues from emerging in the first place or getting worse. The latter of these is a strengths-based approach, focusing on what makes a community strong, rather than what is wrong with a community – focusing on what a community has, rather than what it doesn't have.

The survey will be running until 5pm on Monday, 14 March 2022.

There are two versions of this survey which you can complete at the following links:

Local consortiums win contracts

Two local consortiums have been appointed to support Bradford District’s vital Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise Support and Improvement Programme.

Following the conclusion of a procurement exercise the successful bidders are two local consortiums, ‘Here4BDCC’ and ‘Network Central’. This  contract will operate for three years from April 2022, with the option to extend for a further two years, subject to performance. The value of the new contract is £767,000 per annum and amalgamates existing grants.

We and NHS CCG recognise the significant contribution made to the district by the VCSE and third sector in Bradford and District. This was especially evident during the COVID pandemic at a time when many VCSE organisations were under extreme financial and organisational pressures. The sector has evolved and continues to add immeasurable benefit to those living and working in the district.
