Bradford first West Yorkshire council to introduce greener rubber roads

Greener rubber roads

We are the first local authority in the region to lay a road surface that contains recycled tyres.

The used tyres would otherwise go to landfill or incineration, but have instead been granulated and used to to replace cellulose fibres in the new surfacing, which is called Ultipave R.

Ultipave R  – which is manufactured and trademarked by construction firm Tarmac – also has lower carbon emissions than traditional asphalt, as it is manufactured and supplied at lower temperatures, saving on average 3.5kg of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) per tonne. It is approved for use on motorways and the strategic road network and also offers lasting texture and skid resistance for road users.

A section of Otley Road in Eldwick, between Warren Lane and Spring Lane, is the first in the region to have been resurfaced using the innovative product. Around 700 tonnes of the greener rubber asphalt was laid at the site by Bradford Council’s Highway Maintenance North team. Seven tonnes of recycled rubber were used - keeping 1,000 tyres out of landfill or incineration.

Sexual Health survey – we need your views

Sexual Health survey

People from across the district are being encouraged to come forward and feedback their ideas and views on improving the services available by taking part in a survey on sexual health.

Good sexual health is important for people of all ages and we want to make sure that contraception, family planning and sexual health services are easily accessible for everyone.

We are responsible for commissioning sexual health clinics and contraception services for the whole population across the district and the survey will enable the council to find out what services are needed and when.

Over the last year there has been a shift in how these services have been accessed, which has for example, pushed the focus to being able to request testing kits online.  Prior to the pandemic 16% of people were using online as a way of requesting tests or having a consultation, but in 2020 figures increased to over 50% using online as the main way of accessing these services.

Anyone who is likely to use one of these sexual health services, even if they haven’t used them before, are being encouraged to complete the online survey.

Substance Misuse survey – we need your views

Substance Misuse survey

We are responsible for commissioning services relating to substance misuse for residents across district and this survey will enable the council and it partners to find out what services are needed and when.

People from across the district are being encouraged to come forward and feedback on services available by taking part in a survey.

Substance misuse is the dependency on, or addiction to, the regular use of alcohol and or drugs to the point where it could affect a person’s job, personal life, health and even their personal safety.  The effects of misusing any type of drugs or alcohol can be distressing and cause major health and psychological problems.

Help is out there but in order to keep services up to date and the council needs to review the services on a regular basis to ensure the right support and advice is readily available to those that need it.

Last chance to have your say on plans to revamp transport in Bradford

Time is running out for you to have your say on a series of flagship transport and place-making schemes being brought forward in Bradford through the Department of Transport’s Transforming Cities Fund (TCF).

The Transforming Cities Fund schemes, which are being developed by Bradford Council in partnership with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, aim to substantially improve transport infrastructure across Bradford.

The aim is to help people get around more easily via sustainable forms of travel, including walking, cycling and public transport. The proposals would also create a greener, more attractive civic centre for the district, designed to help people enjoy spending time outdoors and creating a more vibrant environment for outdoor events and activities.

Proposals include the regeneration and redesign of the Interchange, city centre, Darley Street market and will implement a cycle super highway as well as a park and ride along Manchester Road.

We will be posting updates to our new dedicated highways social media platforms. You can find us on:

Bradford Libraries help children get a great start at primary school

A new initiative from Bradford Libraries will help young children get ready to start primary school.

Packs have been put together to help families prepare their little ones to start reception class this September.

The ‘Great Start’ bags contain a range of books to engage, enthuse and excite children about starting ‘big’ school along with a musical toy and rhyme sheet plus a finger puppet for retelling stories. They also include a survival guide for parents and carers to help make their child’s move to primary school stress-free and fun.

The bags are available to borrow from Bingley, City, Clayton, Eccleshill, Ilkley, Keighley, Laisterdyke, Manningham, Shipley, Wibsey and Wyke libraries from Friday 3 September. They can be borrowed for three weeks on an adult ticket.

Plans are in place to roll out the scheme to all 29 libraries across the Bradford District during 2021 so that all parents can have easy access.

Coach and school bus companies invited to bid for CAZ funding

Coach operators and school bus service-providers can now apply for funding to help adapt or replace their vehicles for Bradford’s Clean Air Zone, which is coming to parts of the District in early 2022.

We have been directed by the Government to implement the Clean Air Zone  (CAZ) to cut levels of air pollution from heavily congested roads. Vehicles that do not meet clean air standards will be charged for entering the zone. This will include vans, taxis, lorries, buses and coaches. There will be no charge for private cars.

Funding is now available to coach operators and companies running non-scheduled school bus services, after the council was successful in securing £1.664m Clean Air funding to support businesses to either replace or retrofit their vehicles to reduce harmful emissions.
