The 2020 Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day will be commemorated across the Bradford district but will be done in a different way this year due to COVID-19.
Remembrance and Armistice Days are key dates in the national calendar, and while people are still being encouraged to pay their respects, this year’s events will take place online and at home, in order to protect the health and wellbeing of our residents and veterans.
Wreaths are already beginning to be laid at the Cenotaph in Bradford City Centre including those from the Leader and Chief Executive of Bradford Council . A wreath on behalf of the Lord Mayor of Bradford, Cllr Doreen Lee will also be laid privately at the Cenotaph. Local councillors, on behalf of the Lord Mayor, will be laying wreaths at war memorials sites across the district where services would normally be held over the next few days. As residents, veterans and Remembrance service organisers are encouraged to not gather on Sunday 8 November at 11.00am but take a private moment throughout this Remembrance tide to visit war memorials to pay their respects.
City Hall will be lit up red from today (6 November) until Wednesday, 11 November and The Royal British Legion Poppy Flag and the Union Flag are being flown in Centenary Square.
Council vehicles will be displaying poppies on them and contractors, Jointline Ltd, who do road markings for the Council have offered to draw poppies on the roads in Bradford Shipley, Bingley, Ilkley and North Street in Keighley over the next couple of days free of charge.
Residents and veterans are being encouraged to pay their respects at home, by observing the national 2-minute silence and watching a live stream service from Bradford Cathedral.
On Sunday, 8 November at 10.30am Bradford Cathedral will stream a service
At 3pm a special pre-recorded service will also go on Bradford Cathedral’s YouTube channel and Facebook page. This will include the Very Reverend Jerry Lepine, Dean of Bradford; the Lord Mayor of Bradford, prayers from representatives of different faiths; and the Rt Revd. Toby Howarth. Bishop of Bradford. This will also be streamed on Wednesday, 11 November at 11am. This will also be going out on BCB and Sunrise Radio.
People are also encouraged to use the hashtag #Bradfordremembers on social media with any poppy pictures or other ways they are marking the day with their own acts of remembrance at home.
