Hate Crime Awareness Week 2020

Hate crime week Charles

Marking the week

Efforts to tackle hate crime in the Bradford district will be showcased during National Hate Crime Awareness Week from Saturday, 10 October to 17 October.

Bradford Council, West Yorkshire Police and Bradford Hate Crime Alliance will work together to reinforce their commitment to tackle hate crime in all its forms.

This year's theme

This year’s theme is ‘Unity is our strength’, promoting that if we all stand united and work together we can eradicate any fear and mistrust between people of different backgrounds and cultures.

Hate Crime is defined as ‘any criminal offence which is perceived by the victim, or any other person, to be motivated by hostility or prejudice towards someone based on a personal characteristic’.

There are five centrally monitored strands of Hate Crime: race or ethnicity, religion or beliefs, sexual orientation, disability and transgender identity.

What's happening?

This year’s week will of course be very different due to the pandemic, with most events taking place online.

Highlights of the week include a series of 7 films which have been produced and feature individuals who have been the subject of hate crimes telling their stories of what it is like to be them. A different one will released each day.

Online events include sessions run by Bradford’s Hate Crime Alliance, Victim Support and an anti-rumour and critical thinking session. On Wednesday 14th October at 2pm there will be an online session led by Gail Gilchrist, Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor from the Crime Prosecution Service which will give people a fascinating insight behind the scenes.

Bradford City Football Club have again given their support to the week and will kick it off on Monday evening by wearing specially designed t-shirts, along with their opponents from Harrogate Town as both clubs take a stand against hate crime.

Programme

The online programme can be accessed by visiting the Bradford Hate Crime Alliance website  – all sessions are free to take part.
