Bradford joins global race for COVID-19 vaccine
Bradford researchers are counting down the hours to rolling out the district’s inaugural COVID-19 vaccine trial – a global first.
A team from the Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust will be working with other partner trusts and GPs in the delivery of the world’s first Phase 3 study to test the effectiveness of the COVID-19 vaccine, developed by US biotechnology company Novavax.
The trial is due to start next week (October 5), and will see Bradford become one of only three regional and one of 20 national centres to deliver it.
It involves 500 local recruits and the research team is hoping to vaccinate 50 people per day – or 250 per week.
Hundreds of people have already signed up to become volunteers for COVID-19 trials but Consultant Respiratory Physician, Professor Dinesh Saralaya, who will be leading the study, stressed that many more are still needed.
“This is great news for Bradford and our City of Research that, at last, the vaccine trials are getting underway here,” he said.
“We are looking for thousands of volunteers for a number of vaccine trials. Bradford is part of the global race for a vaccine and we are calling on our local community to sign up.
“This is the only way that we can save as many lives as possible during the pandemic, if Bradford people register. It is also vitally important that people from black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds (BAME) sign up too.”
The Bradford trial’s key role will be to test in real-life whether these vaccines provide immunity against COVID-19, and give people the strongest protection from becoming infected and unwell. All those taking part need to be aged 18 and over, and will not have had COVID-19.
Further vaccine trials are expected to begin in Bradford in November.

Advice for parents and carers on when children should attend school and when to isolate

Stay at home as much as possible

- If you are contacted by the NHS Test and Trace Service please give them the information they need to keep everyone in the UK safe and follow the instructions they give you
- If you or anyone in your household has coronavirus symptoms, you must all self-isolate

Coronavirus testing in Bradford District
Walk-in mobile testing units are available in community locations throughout the district. These testing units are a quick and easy way to get a coronavirus test with or without an appointment.
The units are available for anyone who has symptoms of COVID-19, such as a high temperature, a new cough, or a change in sense of taste or smell, or thinks they may have the virus.
Face coverings
You need to wear a face covering in lots of different places. This is now mandatory for everyone except children under 11 and those with certain disabilities.

 If you do not have to wear a face covering
People who have a reason for not wearing a face covering (if they are exempt) should not be routinely asked to give evidence of this. However it might be helpful to be able to show something on a phone, wear a badge or print out a card that can be shown to explain to others.
If you would like to use an exemption card, or an image you can display to people on your phone, you can download these from the GOV.UK website.
