New guidance: Anyone with coronavirus symptoms must self-isolate for 10 days
The advice has changed for those who have symptoms of coronavirus or believe they may have had contact with the virus.
You must self-isolate for at least 10 days if:
- you have symptoms of coronavirus and tested positive, had an unclear result or did not have a test
- you tested positive but have not had symptoms
The 10 days starts from when your symptoms started. If you have not had symptoms, the 10 days starts from when you had the test.
The main symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19) are:
- a high temperature
- a new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours .
- a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste
You must continue to self-isolate for 14 days if you live with (or are in a support bubble with) someone who:
- has symptoms of coronavirus and tested positive, had an unclear result or did not have a test
- tested positive but has not had symptoms
The 14 days starts from:
- when the first person in your home or support bubble started having symptoms
- the day they were tested, if they have not had symptoms
This is because it can take 14 days for symptoms to appear.
You can find out more information on self isolating from the NHS website.
People with symptoms of coronavirus are most infectious just before, and for the first few days after symptoms begin. It is very important people with symptoms self-isolate and get a test, which will allow contact tracing.
You can find out more about testing for coronavirus in Bradford on our website.
These changes will help provide additional protection to others in the community. This is particularly important to protect those who have been shielding and in advance of the autumn and winter when we may see increases in the number of infections.

Coronavirus testing in Bradford District
Walk-in mobile testing units are available in community locations throughout the district. These testing units are a quick and easy way to get a coronarvirus test with or without an appointment.
The units are available for anyone who has symptoms of COVID-19, such as a high temperature, a new cough, or a change in sense of taste or smell, or thinks they may have the virus.
Face coverings
Wear a face covering on public transport and in shops and supermarkets. This is now mandatory for everyone except children under 11 and those with certain disabilities.
Please see our website for more information about face coverings including a short video by Dr Amir Khan showing how to safely put on and wear a face covering.
If you do not have to wear a face covering
People who have a reason for not wearing a face covering (if they are exempt) should not be routinely asked to give evidence of this. However it might be helpful to be able to show something on a phone, wear a badge or print out a card that can be shown to explain to others.
If you would like to use an exemption card, or an image you can display to people on your phone, you can download these from the GOV.UK website.
