Covid-19: Reopening of nail, beauty, tanning and tattoo parlours
The government has advised that the following businesses are now able to open from Monday 13 July:
- Nail bars and salons
- Beauty salons (except for face treatments – e.g. eyebrow threading, facials, make-up)
- Tanning booths and salons
- Tattoo parlours
- Body and skin piercing services
- Spas (saunas and steam rooms will be kept closed)
- Massage therapy clinics
Whilst these places are all able to open from Monday 13 July, the coronavirus is still here and we all still need to do all we can to stay safe.
Please remember that Covid-19 has not gone away. Please act sensibly to protect yourself, your friends, family, carers, staff and volunteers, and your local health and care services.
If you or anyone in your household has symptoms of coronavirus, however mild, you must immediately arrange to have a test, ring 119 or visit www.111.nhs.uk and not leave your home apart from to get tested.
What can you expect, how can you prepare?
Some places have decided to stay closed and those that are opening will be doing things differently. It’s best to check with the business in advance to see what their plans are. That way you’ll know what to expect and how you can prepare.
Have you booked your appointment?

- Places will be using an appointment only booking system, so you’ll probably not be able to just walk in and get your nails done or get a treatment. Check out their social media pages or give them a ring to book your appointment and find out what their plans are
- Arrive at your appointment time or you might need to wait outside until the previous client has left
- Customers should attend appointments on their own where possible
PPE – (Personal protective equipment) and face coverings

- Screens and barriers may be in place to separate customers and staff
- You’ll probably be asked to use hand sanitiser and you may have to wear a face covering.
- Staff may wear masks and gloves
Social distancing and premises layout

- There will be limited numbers of people allowed in the building
- There might be a queue management or one way system in place with customers entering via one door and having to leave via another or you might need to wait outside until the previous client has left
- Chairs will be placed further apart so that people can maintain social distancing
- There may be limits on toilets (so if you can, go before you set off from home)
- Some facilities may not be allowed to open for example saunas and steam rooms
- Treatment times are to be kept to a minimum
- There will be increased cleaning and hand washing
- No food or drink other than water if needed
Recording your visit

- You may be asked screening questions about your health before being admitted
- Places will have to keep a record of everyone who visits
- Personal details are kept on file for four weeks and are used to contact people if one of the patrons later is hit with coronavirus
Paying

- The business may only be taking card or contactless payments and not cash so make sure you take your cards with you

- Please be responsible and continue to follow the Covid-19 guidelines
- Please abide by the rules of the business and respect the decisions of the staff – they are working to the government guidelines for your safety as well as theirs
- This is all a new experience for everyone and we all need to work together and be kind to one another, so that it can be an enjoyable experience for staff and customers alike
