After an initial test of social distancing measures in Bradford city centre and Shipley, we are ramping up our programme to help the district to re-open for business.
Around 70 schemes designed to enable social distancing have been put in place to help shops to open and people to get about while minimising the risk of transmission of Covid-19.
The measures include:
- widening pavements
- dropping kerbs
- temporarily removing parking bays
- making roads one way
- removing street furniture and planters to increase space for social distancing
- crossing are being automated (where possible) to avoid the need to press the request button,
- signs to advise on safe distances for queueing and walking.
We are also putting measures in place to help people to access the district's shopping areas. Alongside delivering more space for pedestrians, temporary cycle lanes are being introduced and real time information on bus services is being rolled out to a number of bus stops in more remote areas of the district to help those who need to use public transport to access shops and services.
All of the measures have been put in place ready for today's change in government restrictions relating to Covid-19, that means more shops can re-open.
Work to implement measures will continue on an ongoing basis after the 15 June, as the we gear up for news on further relaxations on restrictions to allow other businesses to re-open.
We are also assessing new active travel measures, suggested by the public, to help provide an alternative to using public transport, which is facing capacity restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Well over a hundred suggestions have been logged on our new web portal.
Popular areas for suggestions are Bradford city centre, Shipley and Keighley but comments have been logged right across the district.
Thank you if you have submitted a suggestion. We’re now working through these to identify those we can do and the contributions we’ve received show how everyone is pulling together to help tackle this crisis.
There is still time to submit your suggestion :

A small team in our Highways department have pulled out all the stops to get as many measures as possible designed, approved and implemented as quickly as possible.
Putting in place this many changes across the entire district in such a short time has been a huge task and we'd like to say thank you.
We are determined to make the district accessible for people and retailers to operate in as safe a way as possible.
