Have your say on Manningham Lane upgrades
Bradford Council and West Yorkshire Combined Authority are running a preliminary consultation on proposed changes to the A650 Manningham Lane as part of the Bradford Shipley Route Improvement Scheme.
Due to Covid 19 the consultation will be run online with more detailed events including the larger scheme taking place later in the year.
Opinions and views are sought on this consultation of the proposed improvements which can be viewed at the West Yorkshire Combined Authority's website.
Support for unemployed residents in Bradford
All over the world people have lost their jobs, sources of income, or been furloughed as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. While the widespread, unprecedented nature of the crisis means that you shouldn’t feel any blame for your situation that may be of little comfort when you’re stressed about paying bills and putting food on the table.
It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by uncertainty about when and how the economy will recover or if you’ll be able to find work. It’s important to know that you’re not alone; many people are facing the same insecurity at this time. There is lots of support available locally and online and as a council we are working hard with employers to help them to tell Bradford residents about any vacancies that they have.
Two week window for share of new £6.8m Covid 19 business grant
Bradford Council is calling on local businesses that could be eligible for a new Covid 19 grant to urgently apply. The government has provided the local authority with £6.8 million to be spent on discretionary business grants.
Looking at the number of businesses in the district still needing support, the council believes the scheme will be significantly oversubscribed, so it is important businesses apply before Friday 19 June when applications close.
Changes to funeral arrangements
Mourners are being asked to ensure they continue to observe strict social distancing when new rules at Bradford funerals come into effect from Monday, June 8. From that time up to a total of 20 mourners can attend each funeral either at the crematoria or at graveside burials.
Only 10 mourners will be allowed to enter the crematorium building with 10 more allowed outside who will be able to listen to the service through speakers.
Non-essential retail confirmed to reopen from Monday 15 June
The government has confirmed that shops in England selling non-essential goods will be able to reopen from Monday 15 June.
High street retailers and department stores, including book shops, electronics retailers, tailors, auction houses, photography studios, indoor markets, and shops selling clothes, shoes and toys, will be allowed to open their doors again provided they follow the COVID-19 secure guidelines set out by the government in May.
Employers should also display a notice visibly in their shop windows or outside their store to show their employees, customers and other visitors that they have followed this guidance.
Joint statement on group gatherings
A joint statement from Councillor Susan Hinchcliffe, Leader of Bradford Council and Alisa Newman, District Commander of West Yorkshire Police
“In Bradford District and around the country we’ve started to see a number of socially distanced events organised, both family events and community events. We need to be clear that due to the coronavirus pandemic large gatherings are unlawful. And they’re unlawful for a reason, they put people at a great risk of contracting and spreading this deadly infection, which will inevitably lead to more tragic deaths. We’ve had 487 people die so far in Bradford District and that is why we must take this seriously and all do what we can to stop COVID-19 circulating in our communities and ultimately having to report further deaths.
Bradford Festival cancelled due to Covid-19
Due to safety and social distancing measures brought in to contain the spread of coronavirus, Bradford Council has taken the very difficult decision to cancel the much-loved Bradford Festival in 2020.
Social distancing measures have made staging, performing and crowd managing festival audiences impractical.
Many other festivals and arts events across the UK have also had to be cancelled this year due to the pandemic.
However, the public response to a creative projects grant fund earlier this year encouraging cultural activity during lockdown has been very successful, so the council’s culture team will be looking at how this approach might be adapted for future creative ideas while social distancing rules continue.
Bradford Festival was scheduled to take place 29-31 August in Bradford’s City Park.
Fire safety reminder for business preparing to reopen
As the Coronavirus lockdown is beginning to ease over the next few weeks with more shops and retail outlets due to open to the public, the Fire Service is reminding business owners to be vigilant about fire safety within their premises.
To refresh people’s minds about fire safety regulation West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (WYFRS) has created a handy leaflet with some top tips of what to be vigilant about once the shutters open up after weeks away.
The leaflet, called ‘Returning to Work after Covid-19 Lockdowns,’ is available on the Fire Service website and helps business owners know their responsibilities around fire safety in the workplace in order to keep employees and customers safe.
It gives top tips on everything from keeping fire exits and escape routes clear, to the regular testing of fire alarm systems and keeping fire risk assessments up to date. Whilst aimed at business owners, the advice is also applicable for school premises.
