Stay safe in the warm weather
Bradford’s Public Health team is reminding people to take care in the sun as the weather heats up.
The elderly, those with chronic illnesses, young children and babies can be at risk of being affected by the hot temperatures, so it is important to make sure that they are well protected by staying in the shade, using sun cream and drinking plenty of fluids.
Try to keep your bedroom and living space cool, by closing the curtains on windows that receive the sun and opening your windows at cooler times of the day when safe to do so.
People can protect themselves by following the Sun Smart messages:
- Spend time in the shade between 11am to 3pm
- Make sure you never burn by taking sensible precautions
- Aim to cover up with a t-shirt, wide brimmed hat and sunglasses
- Remember to take extra care with children
- Then use a factor 15 plus sunscreen
Parents urged to quit smoking to stop their children taking up the habit
1,179 children aged 11-15 years old take up smoking in the district every year according to a new report by Imperial College London for Cancer research UK, two thirds of whom will go on to become daily smokers.
According to Bradford Council’s Living Well Team, one of the best ways to stop children smoking is by making your home smoke free and setting an example by quitting smoking.
Children whose parents smoke are nearly three times as likely to become smokers themselves highlighting the importance of making an attempt to quit smoking.
Parents are being encouraging to take action on 31 May for World Health Organisation’s World No Tobacco Day.

Breastfeeding Celebration Week, 1-7 June
During Breastfeeding Celebration Week, Bradford Council is reassuring new parents or any parents that need help and support with breastfeeding their infant that we are #StillHereToHelp.
The Bradford Breastfeeding Buddies are still offering help and advice during the current lockdown. They are offering telephone advice - Text FEED to 66777 with your name, postcode and baby’s date of birth (or due date) and you will receive a call back. Health experts urge safety first approach as lockdown rules ease from Monday
ON the eve of an easing in lockdown restrictions, Bradford’s health experts have joined forces to reinforce the importance of safe social distancing.
Bradford Teaching Hospitals and the council’s Public Health team have come together to urge the community to still stay at home wherever possible.
It is also being encouraged to continue with regular hand-washing, and refrain from hugs and handshakes after it was announced that groups of up to six people from different households will be able to meet outside from Monday.
They can get together in private gardens - in addition to parks - as long as households keep two metres apart and adhere to stringent hygiene safeguards. These include frequent hand-washing and maintaining a minimum of two metre social distancing. It is not permitted to stay overnight.
“While Monday marks a gradual relaxation in England’s lockdown rules, it’s important that there is no relaxation in our efforts to keep ourselves and others as safe as possible,” said Mel Pickup, Chief Executive of Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Bradford Royal Infirmary.
“Despite everyone’s support in fighting the spread of the virus, every week our doctors and nurses are still caring for new patients admitted with COVID-19.
“The virus is still out there and remains a threat to us all.
Bradford’s Director of Public Health, Sarah Muckle, echoed the “safety-first” message.
“We are working hard to slow down the spread of COVID-19 infections in Bradford and everyone has a role to play in achieving this.
“These changes mean friends and family can start to meet loved ones for the first time since March.
“Yet it’s important that this long-awaited moment for many is carried out as safely as possible - especially the need to always keep a distance between people.
“People in our community who have been identified as clinically vulnerable, and are currently shielding, should continue to do so to put their own and others’ health first.”
She added: “We are concerned that some people may interpret Monday’s relaxing of lockdown measures to think that lives have gone back to normal - but they have not.”
With warm sunny weather forecast, the Council has asked people not to head to beauty spots, warning that crowds heighten the risks of the virus spreading.
- To date (May 29), there have been 1,294 confirmed cases and 467 deaths relating to COVID-19 in Bradford District.

Health experts in Bradford are strongly advising that you make and keep your children’s immunisation appointments as planned.
A new guide, available online, for parents and carers of young children is reinforcing the message that it is important to make sure your children are up-to-date with their vaccinations.
Protecting your children from a number of potentially serious illnesses means they are more likely to remain healthy and reduce pressures on NHS services.
Victims of domestic abuse and violence reminded service are #StillHereToHelp
We are reminding residents that services that support domestic abuse or sexual violence victims are still open and can still be contacted now lockdown restrictions have been loosened.
Now some restrictions have been eased, services are continuing to reach out to anyone who needs help to reassure them they are not alone and services are still open and here to help.
