#ChooseCycling for essential travel
Did you know, this week is National Bike Week (6-14 June)? During this week we are highlighting ways to encourage and support riding by bike for essential travel, like commuting to work.
With many businesses opening for the first time in months, we are starting to make more journeys as we return to work. With this in mind, now could be the time to make a change to the way you travel. If you were a regular user of public transport before lockdown, cycling could be an alternative option to ensure you are socially distanced from others during your journey and it will help ease the demand on buses and trains.

Suggest improvements for better social distancing and safer journeys by bike
There are a number of changes that have been proposed across the district to support people to ride their bikes to work, as well as to facilitate social distancing. They include:
- The installation of cycle lanes, protected by barriers, in to and out of Bradford city centre along with other supportive active travel and cycle measures around the district;
- A reduction in speed limits on key routes where this will support cycle friendly infrastructure;
- Increased secure cycle parking in council owned car parks and at other hubs around the district;
- The closure of part of Hall Ings in the city centre to motor vehicles except buses, taxis and those accessing the NCP car park
These suggestions have been put forward by the Council after consulting with ward members, the general public, cycling group members and Clean Air Bradford. If approval is received the measures will be funded through Government monies to implement measures that will facilitate social distancing, as well as make it easier for people to cycle and walk.
If you have an idea as to what could be done to support cycling in the district you can submit your idea through the Bradford Council web portal

Bradford Shipley Route Improvement Scheme
Bradford Council and West Yorkshire Combined Authority are running a preliminary consultation on proposed changes to the A650 Manningham Lane as part of the Bradford Shipley Route Improvement Scheme.
The proposals feature new traffic calming measures, a 20mph zone, safer segregated cycle lanes, improved pedestrian crossings and camera parking enforcement to prevent illegal vehicles parking on the pavement.
Opinions and views are sought on this consultation (phase 2A) of the proposed improvements.
