The council's response to coronavirus so far
The coronavirus has led to a lot of rapid changes, with a big team effort across the district to keep vital services running and provide the support needed to local people. Here’s how some council services and local communities have responded so far, up to 30 April:
- 12,000 vulnerable families received welfare phone calls in ten days
- Over 4,000 food parcels were delivered to local people in the first four weeks
- Over 2,000 extra volunteers answered the People Can campaign to support local vulnerable people
- 180 school sites and 250 early years settings are open for vulnerable children and children of key workers
- 3,250 children each day have been provided with free school meals in school or via a local hub
- £91 million worth of government grants have been allocated to 8,000 local businesses by the council
- Our contact centre have received up to 350 calls every day on our coronavirus support line. This was an increase of 13% on our normal average weekly phone calls
- 219,128 households in the Bradford District received a Household Plan in the post
- 27,000 people interacted with a digital van we sent out displaying vital information in 12 languages
- Over 3,000 council staff are now working from home to keep vital services running
- 223,480 general waste and recycling bins continue to be emptied every week, and 34,544 garden waste bins continue to be emptied every four weeks
- 61 staff from other teams were retrained to work with our depleted been crews
- Our website had 3.3 million page views in April 2020, more than twice the number of views in April 2019.
- 22,000 people have subscribed to our coronavirus email updates.

Bradford Virtual Pride has attracted support from across the world. Dolly Parton, Emmerdale star Lydia Dingle, Stonewall Co-Founder Michael Cashman and Ru Paul’s Drag Race sensation Divina Di Campo are just a few of the famous faces encouraging people to get involved in Bradford Virtual Pride this weekend.
People of Bradford, across the country and indeed anywhere in the world can get involved and tune in from 5pm to 10pm on Saturday, 9 May on the Bradford Pride Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts. Please use the hashtags #BradfordVirtualPride & #Bradford2025

- Stay 2 metres (6ft) away from other people
- Wash your hands as soon as you get home
