There has never been a more important time to stop smoking
Smokers in the Bradford district are being urged to #QuitforCovid to reduce their serious risks from coronavirus (Covid-19).
Smoking tobacco damages the lungs, weakens the immune system and causes a range of severe respiratory problems. Evidence so far suggests people who smoke may be at increased risk if they get Covid-19.
As well as reducing the risks from coronavirus, quitting smoking quickly improves your circulation and your breathing reduces the risks of heart attack and stroke at a time when the NHS is coming under strain.
In the longer term quitting is also linked to reduced depression, anxiety, and stress and improved positive mood and quality of life.
For support, advice and free tools to quit smoking call the Living Well Stop Smoking team on 01274 437700 or visit https://www.nhs.uk/smokefree.
Over 12,000 calls made to shielding residents in the Bradford District
Bradford Council’s Access Team called over 12,000 households in the district in ten days, known to be carrying out shielding, to check they are safe and well.
The mammoth effort saw over a thousand calls a day take place to reach out to those homes that were sent a letter by the Government saying that they are extremely vulnerable to the coronavirus and other households who may be at risk.
They were supported by other Council volunteers drafted in to ensure the households were contacted as soon as possible.
The calls were sometimes the first contact these individuals had received and provided an opportunity to check they were able to get support they need to stay safe and well.
Nasima Ali from Bradford Council’s Access Team said:
“I’m absolutely loving this role of ringing clients who are currently shielding. What’s more beautiful than making ourselves useful and valuable in these difficult times by looking after vulnerable people in our community? If just a phone call is making a difference in some people’s lives than I’m definitely feeling privileged to make that call!”.
Access team member Saima Rehman added:
“People are so grateful. It is so heart-warming and reminds us all how vital these calls are. I feel very fortunate to be part of this amazing team.”
