Stay Safe, Stay Home fire safety campaign
Stay Safe, Safe Home is an initiative developed by West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and is supported by our social housing provider Incommunities.
They have put together a series of fire safety advice to help to reduce the risk of fire, and keep people safe, while they stay indoors amid the Covid-19 precautions currently in place.
Don't start garden fires during the lockdown
In particular, fire officers are urging the community not to start garden fires during the lockdown, and have stepped up their warning about the dangers and risk-to-life of lighting barbeques on balconies.
This follows a 999 call where firefighters were called to an incident in a high rise building where barbecue coals had been placed into a plastic plant pot on a small balcony.
Watch out for shopping scammers
West Yorkshire Trading Standards and Incommunities are warning people across the district to be wary of phone scammers offering to do people’s shopping in return for providing their bank or credit card details. There have also been reports of door to door cold callers to local homes offering a shopping service to residents in return for the handover of their bank/credit cards.
Incommunities are warning everyone not to give their card details over the phone or to anyone they don’t know coming to the door. The housing group are currently making welfare calls to all its customers over 70 years old and as part of the telephone call asking if they have any errands they need doing such as shopping.
Incommunities key workers will then get in touch with the customer to arrange to make a shopping visit. We will discuss payment options when we take the persons order but staff will never cold call a customer to offer this service only. Food parcels are also available to families and individuals who are struggling financially.
So far Inncommunities have made over 4,000 calls to our older and vulnerable customers to check their well-being and made many shopping visits.
Inncommunities are there to support all their customers at this difficult time. If any customers are struggling and need help they should call 01274 257777.
Still here to help
Health, care and support services are still here to help despite the lockdown. If you are unwell with symptoms unrelated to coronavirus then don’t forget that services are still open and please phone your GP. Local organisations and health professionals are using the hashtag #StillHereToHelp on Twitter to highlight some of the work they continue to offer.
If you need any other help, residents across the district can call the council helpline on 01274 431000.
