Council service disruptions
As we continue to work through the challenges that COVID-19 brings, there have been numerous changes and closures across council services where we have had to implement at short notice to adhere to government guidelines.
Our website now provides the most up to date information about these service changes from; schools, parks, libraries, museums, galleries, sport centres, theatres and much more.
Co-ordinated response
Partnership and Council working is focused around delivering five key pledges to the people and businesses of the district:
- Ensure that vulnerable people get the health and social care they need
- Support the resilience of individuals and communities
- Support the resilience of businesses and workers
- Maintain critical Council services
- Ensure that people have the information that they need, know what to do and where to go for support
Maintaining critical Council services
Local partners have decades of experience of planning for emergencies which we are putting into action. This includes making the most of all our assets by identifying the most important activities, working flexibly to share resources and staff and supporting people to work from home. Services are already seeing increases in demand and changing priorities in the frontline and behind the scenes. Staff are responding by displaying all the qualities we need to see us through - professionalism, commitment, flexibility and team work.
- The Council along with partner organisations has taken immediate action to identify key workers in its workforce including those who have caring responsibilities
- Priority services will be maintained but may be delivered differently
- The Council is supporting schools to develop emergency plans
- We are protecting staff in the workplace so that they can continue to deliver services. This includes enabling those who can to work from home, holding meetings by teleconference, providing access to hand washing facilities, creating distance between ourselves and our visitors
- We are reviewing contracts with voluntary and community sector partners to allow them to adapt these to current circumstances and help to deliver the core services that are needed to see us through

Being a good neighbour
During the Coronavirus outbreak many people have come forward to help and support their neighbours, friends and family. We want everyone to be safe while pulling together to help each other out.
Shielding and protecting vulnerable people
The Government has urged up to 1.5 million people in England who face the highest risk of being hospitalised by the virus, as identified by health experts, to shield themselves and stay at home.
They will receive communication shortly with detailed advice on behalf of their GP practice or specialist on how best to protect themselves.
It was also announced that a new Local Support System will make sure those individuals self-isolating at home and who are without a support network of friends and family will receive basic groceries. Community pharmacies will support those who need help getting their medicines delivered.
The Government is working with a partnership of the groceries industry, local government, local resilience and emergency partners, and voluntary groups, to ensure that essential items can start to be delivered as soon as possible to those who need it.
