Please beware of another scam email that we have become aware of. This one claims to be about a refund on Council Tax Reduction.
If you are getting Council Tax Reduction and we need to tell you about any changes, we would not include the details directly in an email. We would always send you an updated Council Tax bill. This would either be sent in the post or as an email attachment if you get paperless bills.
How to spot scam emails
There are several things you can look out for to help you spot scam emails.
What is the sender's email address?
Look at the sender's email address closely. It might say it is from "Council Tax", but if the email address looks unusual it might not be genuine.
Emails from Bradford Council will have a sender address that ends with either @bradford.gov.uk or @public.govdelivery.com.
If the sender's address looks different to either of these, it is probably not genuine.
Check the sender's email address - if it looks unusual, beware
Is the email asking for your debit or credit card details?
We would never ask for your debit card or credit card details.
If you are owed any money we would either send you a cheque or pay you directly into your bank account. We wouldn't need card details for this.
We would not ask for your debit or credit card details
Where do links in the email go to?
If there is a link in the email, don't click it if you are in doubt about the email. You should always be able to check where a link goes without opening it.
If you are using a laptop or desktop computer, you can hover over a link to see a preview of the link URL. If you are using a phone or a tablet, you should be able to preview the link URL by tapping and holding it for a couple of seconds.
If the URL does not include bradford.gov.uk or gov.uk but instead points somewhere completely different, do not open the link.
