Recycling and waste news

What to do with plastic bags...

Please don't put plastic bags in your recycling bin

Plastic bags

We don't want any plastic bags, bin bags, cellophane, cling film or bubble wrap in your grey recycling bin.

Unfortunately, these and similar items are made from a very low grade plastic which can't be recycled from the kerbside and they also get tangled in our sorting machines.

Please try to use bags for life rather than single use carrier bags. There are now many different bags for life to choose from and using these is much better for the environment.

Just to clarify...
Some shops and supermarkets are advertising that their plastic bags are now recyclable. This is great news, but unfortunately we still cannot take them in the grey recycling bins.

What about the plastic film in window envelopes? Yes, you can put window envelopes in your recycling bin, you don't need to remove the plastic film in the window.

Did you know that some supermarkets now have plastic bag collection points?

Plastic bags can be recycled at collection points at most of the larger stores of major supermarkets including Tesco, Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, The Co-op and Waitrose.

If you do have any plastic bags, please try to re-use them until they are past their best rather than just throwing them away.

There are many way you can do this, for instance using them instead of bin liners or dog poo bags.

Alternatively just drop them off at your nearest plastic bag collection point or take them to your local household waste recycling centre.

Have you heard about Ecobricks?

Many people are reducing the amount of plastic they buy, which is great, but there are often unavoidable plastic items we get along the way.

Some people are using Ecobricks which enables them to take personal responsibility for some of the unavoidable plastic, giving them an alternative way of getting rid of it.

An Ecobrick is a reusable building block created by packing clean and dry used plastic into a plastic bottle to a set density. Ecobricks make building blocks which can be used to build furniture, gardens, structures and more.

But please note, Ecobricks cannot be put in your recycling bin, they need to be sent off to an Ecobrick drop off point.

What to do with plastic bottle tops...

People often ask us whether to keep the tops on plastic bottle tops. They are made of a plastic which is harder to recycle but to make it easier for you, we say you can put them in your recycling bin rather than asking you to remove them.

If you prefer, you could always donate them for re-use...

- Some charities collect bottle tops.

- You could send them to Scraptastic, your local re-use shop in Saltaire.

- Or send them to LUSH for free via your local Post Office.

LUSH, the handmade cosmetics company accept plastic bottle lids, including milk bottle tops, drinks bottle tops, cosmetics bottle tops and household cleaning bottle tops. You can package them up and take them to your local Post Office with "Freepost LUSH GREENHUB" on the parcel. They will then go straight to the Green Hub crew to be recycled and upcycled into something new.
