Gritting and roads update

Gritter crew

Our gritting crews will be patrolling overnight tonight (Fri 14 Dec) covering over 300 miles our gritting routes.

We are planning a full grit on Priority 1 routes tomorrow and will be monitoring the forecast and the weather and will grit our priority routes as necessary.

Our priority routes include:

  • bus routes
  • roads with access to hospitals and schools
  • roads that carry the highest amount of traffic.

This covers over 700 miles of roads - 62% of our road network.

We will also be gritting seven footpath routes including the two in the city centre and routes in Keighley, Bingley, Shipley, Ilkley, and Saltaire as necessary.

Safe driving tips

Cars in ice & snow

The advice during icy conditions is to avoid unnecessary journeys, but if you do have to drive, take care and be prepared.

If you have to drive during icy conditions please:

  • allow extra time
  • leave plenty of space between you and the vehicle in front
  • drive slowly and carefully, even on gritted roads, which can still be hazardous.
  • remember that a gritter is about twice the width of a car. So if you park on a gritting route, try to park so that our vehicles can get through to grit the roads.

When considering driving in extreme conditions, ask yourself:

  • is your journey really necessary?
  • have you checked weather forecasts and road conditions?
  • have you familiarised yourself with the Priority One gritting routes when planning your journey
  • have you got plenty of fuel?
  • does anyone know where you are going and your expected time of arrival?
  • have you got warm clothing, hot drinks, food, boots, a torch, grit and shovel with you?
  • is your mobile phone charged up?
