Tomorrow we are launching a new re-use service called 'New to me' which means that people on a trip to the tip may end up coming back with more than they set off with!
As part of our Christmas recycling campaign, our staff at all our household waste recycling centres will be looking out for any items which are still in good condition, which are still considered to be useful to others.
Our Household Waste Recycling Centre at Bowling Back Lane will be offering a collection of goods which we have rescued from our other recycling centres.
The majority of goods on offer will include small items of furniture, kitchen utensils, crockery, pans, toys, books or other re-usable goods. Please note that because of the possible danger, items such as children’s car seats, prams, pushchairs, bikes, helmets or electrical goods will not be included.
The 'New to me' shop will be open Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm.
The shop is situated away from the main disposal skips and will be supervised during the opening times. If the new service proves a success, it will continue in the New Year, and we will look at providing a similar facility at one of our other sites.
Some of the items collected ready for the launch tomorrow
There's some great small items of furniture too
Councillor Sarah Ferriby, Bradford Council’s Executive Member for Healthy People and Places, said: “Not only will waste be recycled, there will also be an opportunity for unwanted, good quality items to be re-used and loved again in a new home.
“This simple green solution will not only offer our residents the opportunity to acquire small household items, it will also provide extra charity funds for the Lord Mayor’s Appeal, as well as being good for the environment.”
Get any item for a £1 donation and in turn make a difference in someone else's life this Christmas!
Please do not under any circumstances put syringes, needles or sharps bins in any of your household waste bins.
We have recently noticed an increase in the number of syringes, needles and sharp bins at our materials recycling facility (MRF) at Bowling Back Lane.
We are finding full sharps bins which are damaged, exposing the dangerous contents, causing danger to our staff.
We need to reduce the number of dangerous items which are being put in the waste and recycling bins to make it safer for our collection crews and our teams who are hand sorting our recycling at the MRF.

You should only use a sharps bin to dispose of used syringes, needles or sharps, but please note they can NOT be collected at the kerbside.
The sharps bin is a specially designed rigid box with a lid which is available on prescription (FP10 prescription form) from your GP or pharmacist.
Only fill the bin up to where it says "Do not fill above this line". When the sharps bin is full, it should be returned to your provider or pharmacy, or alternatively it can be taken to your nearest Household Waste Recycling Centre where it will be disposed of properly.
You must NOT put used needles or other sharps in any of your household waste bins or any other general refuse/street litter bin even if it is in a container that's no longer needed, such as a drinks can or bottle.
Needles can cause serious injuries and can carry blood-borne viruses such as HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C that may be passed on to other people.
Please make sure you dispose of them properly and help keep everyone safe.
All these sharps boxes were in our recycling bins this week
For the medical profession, clinics, nursing homes, dentists and vets, we offer a safe solution to handling, transportation and disposal of infectious waste.
For a small charge they can be collected by using our Clinical Waste service.
Thank you to all who recently donated bikes for Africa. Over the past three months Peter collected 48 bikes, 37 were sent to Africa and 11 were stripped for spares. There were 25 adult, 18 youth/teens and 5 children’s bikes. 38 of those bikes were donated due to our recent article, so thanks for your generosity.
Peter collects bikes from our Ilkley household waste recycling centre, refurbishes them and then sends them through Halfords Bradford to the bikes for Africa charity, Re-Cycle.
If you're having a pre Christmas clear out or upgrading your bike, why not donate your old one to this great charity. Just drop it off at our Ilkley household waste recycling centre or email peterfphillips@blueyonder.co.uk.
