Recycling and waste news

Xmas 2018

Buying cards and wrapping paper?

Over Christmas and New Year we produce on average a third more waste than normal, most of which can be recycled!

According to Recycle Now, the UK is estimated to use almost 300,000 tonnes of card packaging at Christmas – a staggering amount! In fact all the card packaging used at Christmas could cover Big Ben almost 260,000 times!

Please try and think in advance about things you can do to reduce, reuse and recycle during the festive period. So if you're starting to prepare for Christmas and you're buying cards and wrapping paper, please consider if they are recyclable before you buy.

Click on the video below and let Santa show you how to do the scrunch test...

Santa thumbs down

Think about...

  • Buying cards without glitter, foil, beads or any non paper attachments.
  • Using wrapping paper which doesn't have any sparkly or plastic coating.
  • Trying to avoid plastic wrapping and polystyrene packaging where possible.
  • Using aluminium baking trays and serving dishes, and recycle them along with any other tin foil and sweet wrappers.
  • Buying drinks in glass bottles and cans rather than plastic bottles as they can both be recycled endlessly whereas plastic is limited.

Please make recycling part of your Christmas preparations!
