Vote 100: Suffragettes and Propaganda
18 APRIL - 4 SEPTEMBER 2018
2018 marks 100 years since Parliament passed a law which allowed some women, and all men, to vote for the frst time: the 1918 Representation of the People Act. Throughout the year we are celebrating this important milestone in the UK’s democratic history. Get a feel of a campaign offce downstairs in the Cellar Gallery. Explore the suffrage and anti-suffrage propaganda and become inspired by the innovative suffrage merchandise, including posters, badges, leaflets, clothes, even weapons and sabotage, by the women themselves.
In contrast to the historical objects, see how contemporary women are paying tribute to the suffrage campaign. Includes poetry by Bradford’s Amria Khatun, ceramics by Katch Skinner, printmaking by Ruth Fettis and ‘Of the People’ art project. Plus examples of Suffragette poster designs and merchandise by the Museum of London.
Peruse the gallery shop for some of your own propaganda and Suffragette merchandise. Designer Sally Lees will be exhibiting Suffragette Jewellery, commissioned by The Houses of Parliament inspired by and to accompany Mary Branson’s ‘New Dawn’ light installation at Westminster Hall.
A series of exhibitions, displays and events are taking place across our museums including Bradford Industrial Museum’s Vote 100: Spinning a Yarn, 24 April – 3 September 2018, Bolling Hall and Cliffe Castle Museum
