Extreme weather update

Yellow warning of snow and ice

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning of snow and ice in the Bradford district from 3pm on Friday through until Sunday night.

The latest Met Office forecast (as of 4.30pm on Thursday) predicts that "a band of rain and hill snow will increasingly turn to snow through late Friday afternoon and evening. As this band moves south-westwards, ice will form in places where skies clear. Some roads and railways are likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services. Icy patches are likely on untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths."

On Saturday rain is expected to turn to snow "followed by scattered snow showers through the remainder of the day. These showers may become more prolonged, particularly during the evening. Any melting of lying snow will lead to an ice risk on untreated surfaces on Saturday morning and night. Travel delays on roads with some stranded vehicles and passengers, along with delayed or cancelled rail and air travel is possible. Some rural communities could become cut off and power cuts may occur. Some injuries from slips and falls are possible on icy surfaces."

Keep an eye on the forecast

The yellow warning of snow and ice might be updated as we progress through the next couple of days. Please keep an eye on the weather forecast and take extra care on the snow and ice.

Safe driving tips

When considering driving in extreme conditions, ask yourself

  • is your journey necessary.
  • have you checked weather forecasts and road conditions and carefully considered the advice given.
  • have you got plenty of fuel.
  • does anyone know your destination and expected time of arrival.
  • have you got warm clothing, hot drinks, food, Wellingtons, a torch and shovel with you.
  • If you park your car on a gritting route, please remember, a gritter is about twice the width of a car, so try and park so that our guys can get through to grit the roads.
