Remember the fly tipping van that was seized and crushed?

In August 2016 a persistent fly-tipper was caught on camera using a van which was later seized and crushed in November 2016. The Ford Transit van was linked to multiple fly-tipping offences across the district and it was seized after being spotted on a grass verge in Lynfield Drive, Heaton. Imran David Bham and another person were filmed using the van to fly-tip but he was not identified and brought to justice until recently. The other man has not been caught.

On Weds 14 February at Huddersfield Magistrates’ Court, Mr Bham, 31, of Chellowfield Court, Heaton, Bradford, pleaded guilty to four offences of fly-tipping on the same day in August 2016 at an area near Leeds Road, Bradford. He also admitted obstructing a Council Enforcement Officer by refusing to give information about the other person involved.

On Friday 2 March he was ordered to pay £1,311.00 costs, £85.00 victim surcharge and given 120 hours community service.

At the time the vehicle was seized, the van had no registered keeper and was not insured so it was not possible to trace the owner. It was found to contain a load of waste which could have been intended for another fly-tip. After being taken away, the van was fed into to the crushing machine at the yard of CJ Metal Recycling Ltd in Keighley. Watch the video of the van being crushed

Using a law which came into force in 2015, we can seize vehicles if there is evidence that it has been used for fly-tipping and there is a suspicion that it may be used again. We have the power to sell the van but it was in such a poor state there was no point.

Fly tipping is a crime

Fly tipped waste can be either domestic or commercial. The size of a fly tip can range from one bag of waste to a whole lorry load. Penalties include a fixed penalty notice of £400, an unlimited fine and up to 5 years in prison and vehicles used to commit offences can also be seized and crushed.

If you see anyone dumping rubbish please report it online immediately.

Did you know? Householders can be fined up to £5,000 and end up with a criminal record if they ask someone else to remove their rubbish and it is found to be fly tipped.

Don’t use unlicensed waste carriers – if you do, you’re breaking the law too.

It is free to take extra waste to our household waste recycling centres

Bin collections following the bad weather

Thank you for bearing with us last week. It was a very difficult decision to make – standing down waste collections but we have to consider the safety of both our staff and residents.

This week we will be collecting both general waste and recycling bins from any missed properties on your usual scheduled collection day.

For example, if your recycling (grey) bin should have been emptied on Wednesday but wasn’t, please leave your bin out and put out your general waste (green) bin as well next Wednesday. Both will be emptied, either by our recycling or general waste crews.

  • Please don’t contact us to report missed bins, we are aware of the areas that have been missed
  • Don’t worry about extra waste – just make sure it is placed next to your bin, in tied bags and we will collect it as a one off.
