From the beginning of September, if you leave excess waste next to your bin, it will not be taken away. After your bin has been emptied, the collection crew will put any excess waste in the empty bin ready for the next scheduled collection. Please also note that contaminated bins will not be emptied until the incorrect items have been removed.
Where residents continue to present excess or uncontained waste (side waste, not in the bin), overloaded bins (lid not closed or too heavy), or contaminated bins (wrong items in the bin), the collection crews will report issues using new technology in our lorries.
The new technology helps the crews to collect more accurate information as they go on their rounds. It allows them to log any bins not put out, contaminated with the wrong type of waste, or are too heavy. The collection lorries now have 360 degree cameras and the crews also wear body cameras.

Where residents persistently present bins in the incorrect way, the Council reserves the right to take appropriate enforcement action. The Domestic Waste and Recycling Policy will be enforced.
Extra waste items can be taken to your local Household Waste Recycling Centre, or for a small charge you can arrange for a Bulky Waste Collection.
The number of missed bin requests had increased since the start of alternate week bin collections, but now the number of requests have been coming down as the crews become more familiar their new rounds and residents are getting used to their new collection days.
Remember...
- the more you recycle, the more room you will have in your general waste bin
- please don't put plastic bags, cellophane wrapping, clingfilm, crisp packets or sweet wrappers in your recycling bin
- flatten your cardboard boxes, plastic bottles, tins and cans to make more room in your recycling bin
- you can have more than one recycling bin, they are free, request yours now.
Fly tipping is where people illegally dump waste onto the highways, footpath or adjacent land. The size of a fly tip can range from one bag of waste to a whole lorry load. Fly tipped waste can be either domestic or commercial.
Fly tipping is a crime. Penalties include:
- fixed penalty notice of £400
- unlimited fine and up to 5 years in prison
- vehicles used to commit offences can also be seized and crushed
If you see anyone dumping rubbish please report it online immediately.
It's good to see the courts taking this seriously, see our recent news about a fly tipper being tagged by the court.
Did you know? Householders can be fined up to £5,000 and end up with a criminal record if they ask someone else to remove their rubbish and it is found to be fly tipped. Don’t use unlicensed waste carriers – if you do, you’re breaking the law too. Find out more about the household duty of care.
The Preferred Bidder for a 12-year waste treatment contract for Bradford Council has been announced following the outcome of a detailed analysis and evaluation process.
Associated Waste Management (AWM) will treat Bradford’s residual waste, around 150,000 tonnes every year mainly at their newly commissioned waste treatment facility in south Leeds, which will produce additional recyclables as part of preparing the waste for export to off site thermal treatment to generate electricity. A significant portion of thermal treatment capacity, currently being developed by energy company SSE at their Ferrybridge facility, has been reserved for this purpose. Read more on AWM's website.
