Waste and recycling

Alternate week collections starting in your area soon

To make our bin collection service more efficient and reduce the cost of waste disposal, we are introducing alternate week bin collections

Alternate week collections will start from Tuesday 4 July 2017 for residents of Bradford. Other areas of the district, such as Keighley, Shipley and Wyke are already on alternate week collections. Please also note, residents on rural rounds, who are serviced by a smaller 14 tonne lorry for general waste, and a transit van collecting blue bags and caddies for recycling, will not be affected by the changes at the moment.

What does this mean?

Your general waste (green) bin will not be emptied weekly. Your general waste (green) bin will be emptied one week and your recycling (grey) bin will be emptied the following week. Your collection day will be the same day for both bins but emptied alternate weeks.

When will my bins be collected?

Your collection day may change, we will still come to empty a bin once a week, but will alternate between your grey and green bins. A bin hanger will be placed on your green bin the week before the new service starts, showing your new collection day and which bin to put out first.

Don't forget...

  • Put your bins out by 6.30am on the collection day
  • Make sure access to your bin is clear, if not your bin may not be emptied
  • We will only empty one general waste bin per household
  • Bins should have the lid closed with no waste at the side
  • Bins containing the wrong things will not be emptied
  • You can now put more recyclable items all in one bin
  • You can have more than one recycling bin, they are free, order your bin now
  • Flatten packaging, plastic bottles and cans to make more room in your bin
  • You can take excess or bulky waste to your local household waste recycling centre or request a bulky waste collection
  • The Domestic Waste and Recycling Policy will be enforced

Find out your bin collection dates

mobile app

You can check your bin collection dates online OR if you have a smart phone or tablet, you can download our free app from the Google Play store or Apple App Store.

Just search for Bradford Council. It will remind you when to put your bins out for collection.

Please note, if you live in Bradford, the new alternate week collection dates will be updated on the app and online from Monday 3 July.

Missed bin collections

The collection service for domestic waste normally operates Tuesday to Friday between 6.30am and 5.15pm. Where collections are delayed due to transport problems, we will always try to catch up on the same day, or the following morning.

Our collection crews now have in-cab technology which allows them record when bins have not been put out for collection, as well as any access or other problems which may have prevented them from emptying any bins.

Before you report a missed bin collection please check that:

  • you put your bin out before 6.30am
  • you put the right bin out on the right day
  • there is no tag on your bin informing you that there is a problem with your bin eg. it contains the wrong materials
  • you did not leave rubbish at the side of your bin, if so, the bin will have been emptied and the side waste placed in it for emptying on your next collection date
  • there are no problems with access to your road, sometimes, inconsiderate parking means that our vehicles can’t get to everyone’s property
  • Check the council service disruption page to see if there are any problems at the moment.

If you bin has been missed, please report it online or call us on 01274 431000.
