Christmas and New Year bin collections

Christmas recycling

There will be no changes to any bin collections (general waste, recycling or garden waste) over the festive period this year. Please put your bins out on your normal collection day.

Don’t forget to recycle as much as you can. Did you know? Over Christmas and New Year we produce on average a third more waste than normal - most of which could be recycled!

Removal of unwanted garden waste (brown) bins

garden bin

Following the introduction of the chargeable garden waste collection service a programme has been put in place to collect the garden waste (brown) bins for residents who want them removing.

Over the last 4 weekends crews have been working in areas covered by the Keighley teams to collect any unwanted bins.

Bins in other areas will be removed early next year. Watch out for updates on the website or in future newsletters. If you have given us your postcode area in your Stay Connected subscriber preferences, we will be able to update you a few days before we are in your area.

Shaping the future through Binnovation

Binnovation is an exciting new project we are working on, along with the University of Bradford and a Leeds based company, Hebeworks. This forward-looking project will help our waste collection service develop smarter ways of collecting bins in the future.

The trial, of approximately 60 households, runs until the end of April 2017. Bins will be fit with a sensor on the underside of the lid of general waste and recycling bins. The sensor will send us data including how full the bin is, how often it is used, when and how the bin is moved, the distance it was moved, and temperature of the waste. The information we gain will help new innovations in the way we collect and dispose of our household waste.

There are no plans to extend this project at this stage - its purely a way of seeing if there are new ways, never consdered before, using new technolgy to help develop systems.

Tackling fly tipping together

Fly tipping

Did you know, fly tipping is a criminal offence?

Fly tipping is where people illegally dump waste onto the highways, footpath or adjacent land. The size of a fly tip can range from one bag of waste to a whole lorry load. Fly tipped waste can be either domestic or commercial.

Penalties include:

 - fines up £50,000 and one year in prison

 - an unlimited fine and up to 5 years in prison

 - vehicles used to commit offences can also be seized and crushed

Householders can be fined up to £5,000 and end up with a criminal record if their rubbish is found to be fly tipped. Don’t use unlicensed waste carriers – if you do, you’re breaking the law too. Find out more about the household duty of care.

If you see anyone dumping waste please report it immediately online or call 01274 434366.
