Geomagnetic Storm Update 11- October - 2024
A fast–moving coronal mass ejection that left the Sun on 9th Oct arrived at approximately 15:22 UT on the 10th and caused major geomagnetic storms. The timing of these storm events coincided with clear dark skies over much of the country, allowing sightings of the aurora much further south than usual.
Our aurora camera installed at the Eskdalemuir Geomagnetic Observatory near the Scottish borders captured last night's storm (click on the link to watch).
Whilst there could be further chances of seeing the aurora tonight, 11th Oct, but the main phase of the coronal mass ejection has passed, and the geomagnetic activity is expected to subside. Assuming clear dark skis, those in Scotland, northern England and Northern Ireland have the best chance if the weather is favourable.
