Welcome

Hello and welcome to the Spring 2024 educators’ newsletter from the British Geological Survey.

In this newsletter, we will keep you up to date with free learning resources from BGS’s Discovering Geology webpages on a range of curriculum-linked topics, summarise any new and relevant research done by BGS scientists for you, and share any education or public engagement news from BGS. We will also share other relevant news or opportunities from the earth science community.

New Resources

Fossil loan box

Fossil loan kits now available

As part of our offer for learners, we have several fossil kits that we can send out to your school or organisation for you to loan for a period of two to four weeks. Each box comes with a wide variety of real fossils along with information about the specimens contained within.

To borrow one of the kits, please email BGS Engage (bgsengage@bgs.ac.uk) and provide some options for dates that you might like to have the box. We have a limited number of boxes so we may not be able to guarantee the dates you ask for, but we will try our best!

For more information about what is included in the kits, please visit our fossil loan box web page. Further information on fossils is also available on our discovering geology fossil web pages.

Minecraft volcano world

Minecraft education learning resource

We have been hard at work developing a classroom resource about volcanoes using Minecraft Education aimed at key stage two learners. As an EarthEd subscriber you can access an early preview of this learning resource to explore. Fly around a volcano, explore magma chambers and find clues on a treasure hunt, there is lots to see and do in this volcano themed Minecraft Education world. A complete lesson plan along with a Minecraft Education beginners guide for teachers is available to download. We are happy to accept any feedback to our BGS engage email (bgsengage@bgs.ac.uk).
