BGS Open Data Hub
In August 2023, we launched the BGS Open Data Hub, which is the home page for all BGS public content shared via ArcGIS Online. ArcGIS Online allows BGS to work collaboratively with other organisations and share our data with a global audience, and it provides tools to build effective, configurable applications.
The BGS Open Data Hub provides the main point of access for users finding our data via ArcGIS Online and it allows BGS to track how users interact with our data thanks to Google Analytics. There are currently some 35 datasets, storymaps, applications and maps in the catalogue, including GeoClimate Open, BGS Geology 625K, earthquakes and the Single Onshore Borehole Index (SOBI). In fact, SOBI is currently one of the most-accessed Living Atlas layers.

Events
BGS at the Contamination & Land Remediation Expo
BGS recently participated in the Contamination & Land Remediation Expo (CLR) held on 11 and 12 September. The event was a great success for BGS, with a significant turnout and valuable interactions with a diverse audience, including members of the public, geotechnical engineers and private companies. These conversations provided a platform to exchange ideas, insights and expertise in various fields. The issues discussed ranged from the use of BGS's open data to its involvement in low-carbon technologies, hazard datasets and public geology. BGS's GeoIndex attracted a lot of public feedback, with comments stating how critical it was to engineering geologists' day-to-day work.
CLR plays an important role as a forum for professionals and stakeholders in the industry to come together and discuss important issues related to contamination and land remediation.

BGS at the British Cartographic Society
BGS attended the British Cartographic Society (BCS)’s 60th Anniversary Conference 2023 in Cambridge, held on 20 and 21st September. The audience included the UK Hydrographic Office, The National Archives, RNLI, ESRI, HarperCollins UK Publishers Ltd., The Royal Geographical Society (with IBG), London Search and Rescue, SwissRe, Oxford University and Cambridge University.
Themes discussed at the conference included:
- using data to extend our understanding of long-term changes in environment to help inform current practice of human activities (decolonising collections)
- redressing the historical bias of cataloguing map records
- restoring the voice and acknowledging the contributions from indigenous communities and individuals
- hidden histories of women and maps
- the challenge of communicating migratory patterns over time
- geospatial data in supporting lifesaving activity
- inconsistencies of data between countries as an issue for the global insurance industry
These discussions gave rise to a lot of thought-provoking exchanges such as methods of communicating issues that are not easy to map, global standardisation of classification of data produced by different countries and how the presence of Resilience Direct could be enhanced.
Charities such as the RNLI and London Search and Rescue rely on data to be available at little to no cost. BGS can help to fulfil such requirements. To get in touch to discuss any issues, please contact the digital data team (digitaldata@bgs.ac.uk).
