BGS launches new 5-year strategy

BGS maps out priorities with new five-year strategy

We are delighted to launch our new strategy for 2023 to 2028, 'Understanding our Earth'. BGS is the oldest geological survey in the world and continues to deliver its core mission: to use knowledge about geology to address the existing, evolving and new challenges that society faces.

Our new strategy sets out four priority science areas: maps and models for the 21st century; a more secure energy transition; improved water security; and living with geological hazards.

The strategy also outlines how BGS will develop over the next five years. We are recruiting new scientists to expand our expertise and flexibility and we are committed to supporting development of a diverse talent pipeline in geology and environmental science.

Impacts of climate and land use change on groundwater quality

The Environment Agency (EA) and British Geological Survey (BGS) have been working together to improve our understanding of how climate and land use change impact groundwater quality in England. This research also aims to make projections on the state of these impacts in the future, understand the key risks and inform how we can adapt to these changes.
