Green Heat Network Fund to be extended
As a result of the success of the Green Heat Network Fund (GHNF) we can now confirm an extension of the support available via the scheme. We are also making some changes to the Fund, including extending the funding period and amending some scheme rules.
In March, we announced in Powering up Britain that capital support for low and zero-carbon heat networks would be extended to 2028. This included £220 million for the Heat Network Transformation Programme over 2025/26 and 2026/27.
GHNF has proved very popular, and the pipeline of prospective applicants exceeds the fund’s current size. Therefore, additional capital funding will be allocated to the Fund which will be available over a longer period to provide greater certainty in the medium-term.
This means that future applicants will be able to apply for funding that could be drawn down in financial years 2023/24 through to 2026/27. Please note that the allocation of funding in the later years of the scheme is expected to be highly competitive. Projects able to take funding earlier are encouraged to do so.
Scheme changes
We plan to introduce some scheme rule changes which may alter the types of projects that are eligible for funding. We will be updating the guidance and application form to reflect these changes and will share further details as soon as they are available.
Whilst we are considering these changes, our delivery partner Triple Point will be there to support applicants and we would encourage anyone considering an application to get in touch with Triple Point by emailing enquiries@tp-heatnetworks.org.
Heat Network Delivery Unit funding
The latest round of Heat Network Delivery Unit funding is now open for applications until 31 December 2023, with applications assessed at the point of submission.
The Heat Networks Delivery Unit provides grant funding and guidance to local authorities in England and Wales for heat network project development. Applications are welcome from Local Authorities, NHS Trusts, other government departments, universities, registered social landlords and property developers.
In this round we are focusing on organisations most likely to participate in a heat network zone so that they can better prepare in advance of incoming legislation in the Energy Bill.
Please contact HNDU@beis.gov.uk for an application form.
