Government outlines plans to help cut energy bills
Good morning,
New support for households, businesses and public sector organisations facing rising energy bills in Great Britain and Northern Ireland was unveiled by Business Secretary Jacob Rees-Mogg yesterday supporting growth, preventing unnecessary insolvencies and protecting jobs.
Through a new Government Energy Bill Relief Scheme, the Government will provide a discount on wholesale gas and electricity prices for all non-domestic customers whose current gas and electricity prices have been significantly inflated in light of global energy prices. This support will be equivalent to the Energy Price Guarantee put in place for households.
What does this mean for heat network customers?
Heat network customers, both domestic and non-domestic, should see reductions in the price of heating through this intervention.
The Energy Bill Relief Scheme will apply to energy suppliers who will pass on cost reductions to heat networks who in turn will pass on these reductions to the businesses and households that they supply with heat.
The Government will set a Supported Wholesale Price – expected to be £211 per MWh for electricity and £75 per MWh for gas, less than half the wholesale prices anticipated this winter.
Emergency legislation to underpin the scheme will be introduced at the earliest opportunity when Parliament is back from recess in October.
Best wishes,
Arran Mornin
