Safe driving in snow and ice

January is often a month when due to snow and ice the roads can become hazardous. The key to safe driving is to slow down—stopping distances can be up to 10 times longer on icy roads. Gentle manoeuvres and reduced speed are essential.
-
Allow extra time for your journey and plan routes on main roads, which are more likely to be cleared.
-
Get up 10 minutes early to de-ice your car.
-
Wear dry, comfortable shoes to prevent slipping on the pedals.
-
Ensure you have at least a quarter tank of fuel in case of delays.
-
Clear all windows and wait for the windscreen to fully demist.
-
If driving an automatic, check for a winter mode or follow manufacturer’s advice for slippery conditions.
If you are heading out on a journey it always worth putting some extra warm clothes and coats, a flask of hot water and food in case you become stuck in traffic due to poor weather.

Follow these tips to ensure you use electric blankets safely.

• Store them flat, rolled or loosely folded to avoid damaging the wiring
• Don’t buy second hand blankets and check regularly for wear and tear

Have Your Say on the Council Tax Consultation

Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Authority (FRA) is considering a £5 increase to the fire and rescue service’s council tax for the 2025/26 financial year. This would raise the Band D charge from £112.72 to £117.72—just an extra £5 a year (42p per month). The increase would generate an additional £1.1 million to support vital services for Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service (BFRS).
Your input is important! The FRA wants to know if you support this increase to help maintain high-quality, life-saving services. Share your views by completing the consultation here:
