It's June already and there's so much happening for people of every age in Bedford Borough this month!
June is also the Month of Community and we will be sharing information and events on our Facebook page throughout the month based on the following themes:
- Neighbourhood Watch Week (1-7 June): Focusing on community safety and looking out for each other
- Volunteers Week (2-8 June): Celebrating the unsung heroes who dedicate their time and energy to making Bedford a better place
- Great Big Green Week (7-15 June): Kicking things off with a focus on environmental action and sustainability
- Loneliness Awareness Week (10-14 June): Raising awareness and finding ways to combat isolation by fostering connections
- Carers Awareness Week (10-16 June): Recognising and supporting the incredible work of carers in our community
- Refugee Week (16-22 June): Celebrating the contributions, creativity, and resilience of refugees
- Small Charity Week (23-28 June): Highlighting the vital role and impact of small charities in Bedford.

Throughout the month
Sessions across Bedford Borough
There are almost 20 weekly activities, aimed at people aged 60-plus, which run throughout the year with breaks for the bank holidays.
From high-impact to low-impact activities such as chair yoga, walking football, pickleball, sitness sessions, swimming, dance and movement sessions and racket sports.
All sessions are pay as you go, so no need to book, and are based at the following venues
- John Bunyan Sports & Fitness Centre
- Harpur Suite
- Bedford International Athletics Stadium
- Kempston Pool & Fitness
- Church Lane Community Centre
- Jubilation Centre
- Clapham Village Hall.

Wednesday 4
Meet our Economic Growth team
Silver Square, Silver Street, Bedford
Local businesses are invited to attend an open event hosted by Bedford Borough Council to meet the Portfolio Holder for Economic Growth, Planning and Prosperity (including Town Centres) and the Economic Growth & Development team.
The drop-in session will take place at Silver Square from 4-6pm.
The event offers business owners a valuable opportunity to share their views, ask questions, and learn more about current and upcoming initiatives.
The Council encourages all Bedford businesses to come along and take part in the discussion.

A drop-in workshop for children under 5 years of age. No need to book.
Just pop in any time between 10.30am-midday or 1-2.30pm, and stay for as long as you like.
Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Friday's, for 11-17 year olds
Junior Gym and Junior Sports Hall activities are available for young people aged 11–17, at John Bunyan Sports and Fitness.
Activities are held from Tuesday-Friday between 3.30-6pm, and on Saturdays from 9-11am, midday-2pm and 3-5pm.
Junior basketball, junior five-a-side football, junior badminton and junior table tennis are all available to book online, on the app or in person. The sports hall is available for drops-ins within these times to play with friends!

Castle Newnham School - North Site (Polhill Avenue)
A free open morning for children and families who would like to learn more about the Saturday Morning Music Centre.
Sessions include choir, brass, woodwind, drums, ukulele, keyboards, guitars, composing with iPads and more!
Come along, take part in groups, play instruments, ask questions and find out what the Music Centre is all about.
The Saturday Morning Music Centre is run in line with the academic year and this open morning is for children who may be considering lessons and performing groups in September 2025.

Keep your heart in tune in June
Introducing the newly-formed North Bedfordshire Network of St John Ambulance (three local units have amalgamated) to the public of Bedford, plus come along to learn and practice aspects of first aid.
This includes opportunities to learn CPR, use a defibrillator, manage a choking episode, treat different types of wounds, take your own blood pressure, deal with first aid emergencies or ask the team anything about first aid.

Yoga and Wellbeing in the Park is a free event offering a broad range of yoga and wellbeing sessions suitable for all ages and abilities in Bedford Park.
The event features two activity zones with a diverse schedule of sessions led by fully-qualified instructors, including hatha yoga, vinyasa flow, chair yoga, qigong, emotional freedom technique (EFT), laughter yoga, sound bath meditation, and mindful games for families. Sessions cater to various needs, including those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), pregnant and postnatal participants, and anyone seeking gentle or more dynamic practices.
In addition to the yoga sessions, attendees can visit the Wellbeing Information Desk, where local mental health services and charities will provide advice and resources. Visitors can learn about regular weekly activities focused on improving mental health and wellbeing, self-help strategies, and local support services. Wellness chair massages will also be available 11am-3pm.

Celebrate nature and learn about sustainability at these amazing free creative workshops, information stands and stalls:
Try out your photography skills at Curious Adventures in Nature – a smartphone photography workshop and nature walk with artist Graham Fudger.
Enjoy a nature-inspired clay workshop with artist Paige Denham or make a stick-doll with upcycled materials with Helen Jones.
If you're visiting with younger children, aged eight or younger, there will be free sensory crafts and play activities exploring the world of caterpillars and butterflies.
Find out more about a new local nature reserve from Country Days, and talk with representatives from Bedfordshire Natural History Society about the amazing plants and creatures that you can spot locally.
Last but not least you can learn all about Swifts and Swallows with brilliant animator (from Peppa Pig and Hey Duggee) Will Rose.
Plus, don't miss the plant stall just outside, from 11am, grab a bargain from the wonderful volunteers, all proceeds go towards developing the gardens around The Higgins Bedford.

This market runs on the second Sunday of each month from 10am-3pm, this month due to refurbishment works in St Paul's Square the market will be in Harpur Square.

Bedford Craft Fair
These Saturday craft markets will have different local craft traders and free workshop/performance every second Saturday on the Silver Square and along the whole Silver Street!
From soap flower gifts to up-cycled jars and glasses, wax melts to handmade bags and clothes, hand-painted plant pots to knitwear, you will find all high-quality and original crafts that showcase our local crafters’ passion and expertise.
The market runs from 9.30am-3.30pm.

Join trained actor and teacher Toby as he engages children with immersive story reading.
He'll also help children create their own stories using puppets, drawings, songs and the artwork from the gallery.

Nature and Wellbeing Space
Bedfordshire Rural Communities Charity offer weekly sessions to promote wellbeing among parents in the peri-natal period - during pregnancy and the first year of baby’s life.
The group will support the wellbeing of parents and parents-to-be by offering group nature-based activities that encompass the Five Ways to Wellbeing - Connection, Be Active, Learn, Take Notice and Give Back.
