With the weather warming up over the Bank Holiday weekend, if you're heading out into the garden for a barbecue here are some handy tips on how to host a waste free barbecue.
Crockery Use real crockery or reusable options e.g. bamboo that can be washed and reused at your next BBQ or picnic out in the sun.
Recycle Provide a recycling container for your guests to put any empty beer cans, aluminium foil and plastic bottles in. You can then tip them straight into your orange lidded bin. Save any empty glass bottles and jars and take to your local mini recycling site. A full list of sites is available at www.bedford.gov.uk/recycling.
Leftovers Allow leftovers to cool before storing them in the fridge ready to make sandwiches, curries or a casserole later.
Love Food Hate Waste have loads of really useful creative recipes on how to use up leftovers from a barbecue or other meals through the week.
Plastic bottles are a common item in the orange lidded recycling bin, but a recent study by the RECOUP UK Household Plastic Collection Survey found that actually only 59% of plastic bottles placed on the market are being recycled.
Plastic bottles come in all shapes and sizes, from a 2 litre drinks bottle and milk bottles to plastic soap bottles and bleach bottles, fabric softener bottles to shampoo and conditioner bottles. These can all go into the orange lidded recycling bin for recycling. When they’re empty simply rinse and squash the bottles and pop them straight into the recycling bin.
Top tip: try having a separate bin in the kitchen, or a basket at the top of the stairs, making it easier to collect recyclables around the home.
Visit our website to see what else can go in your orange lidded bin.
If you are having a spring clean in the garden this bank holiday weekend, the Household Waste Recycling Centre on Barkers Lane, Bedford is open daily from 9am to 5pm, including Bank Holidays.
A booking system is still in place onsite so please visit www.bedford.gov.uk/hwrc to check what can be accepted onsite and to make an appointment. Please only book an appointment if you need one. If it turns out you don’t need it - no problem, just visit our website, type in your booking number and cancel the appointment. That will then free it up for someone else.
