Network Rail- Bromham Road Bridge
Network's Rail closure of Bromham Road Bridge for their electrification of the Midland Main Line, started on Monday 24th June.
The Council's Highways Team are monitoring the impact of this closure on our roads. The main pressure points are on Great Ouse Way, the A6 coming into Bedford and in Queens Park during the morning rush hour, and Shakespeare Rd, Clapham Rd and the Great Ouse way in the evening. They will continue to monitor this, and look at options to further alleviate traffic pressure.

Transporting Bedford 2020 - Manton Lane
As part of our Transporting Bedford 2020 project, works continue on Manton Lane where we are making improvements to existing traffic signals, installing new lights at the junction with the School, and widening the road to ease the flow of traffic.
To help keep traffic moving, during term-time works are restricted to between 9.30am-3.30pm and no temporary traffic lights are in use on the road during these hours.
Further works to install a footbridge over Manton Lane, and wider improvement works around and between the Manton Lane/Clapham Road and Paula Radcliffe Way/Great Ouse Way roundabouts will follow once Network Rail's works have finished.

Ongoing and Upcoming Roadworks
Gas Works in Kempston
Cadent are carrying out essential gas maintenance in Kempston, to replace old iron gas mains with more durable plastic pipes.
These works continue, and are currently over 2 weeks ahead of schedule, which has allowed them to simplify the temporary traffic lights set-up to help traffic flow better.

Major Improvements to A6 At Wilstead
A stretch of A6 south of Bedford, past the village of Wilstead will be rebuilt this summer.
This stretch of the A6 is in serious need of rebuilding as a consequence of the foundations of the road having collapsed.
The importance of safety for road users is paramount and the road is being completely rebuilt in a multimillion-pound investment by Bedford Borough Council, with the works being carried out by Henderson & Taylor.
These works will require the road to be closed from 22nd July, with the project expected to be complete and the road re-opened by early December.
The road will be closed from the Bedford Road junction in the north to the Luton Road junction in the south, while this stretch of the A6 is removed and rebuilt. The diversion route will be clearly signed, via the A507 and A600 through Cotton End.

Transporting Bedford 2020- Britannia Road
Works to reduce congestion at Britannia Road, a well-known traffic hotspot, will begin on Saturday 20th July.
These works will widen the road, which will create more space for traffic, while keeping space for pedestrians; and deliver major changes to the road layout. During the works, Britannia Road will be open one way to traffic going from Ampthill Road to Kempston Road. There will be a clearly signed diversion route for other traffic in place throughout the works, around Kingsway and St Mary’s Street.
Transporting Bedford 2020 is a multimillion pound investment covering a number of different projects in town. it is a condition of the external funding we have secured that we have to start delivering these works now, or we risk losing the money and being unable to deliver the project benefits.
