More than 700 young people have already engaged with a major new youth-led initiative in Bolsover District, thanks to #iwill Fund investment designed to give young people a stronger voice in shaping their communities and future opportunities.
Young people aged 12–25 across the district are being given the opportunity to share their views, develop valuable skills and play an active role in shaping the future of youth opportunities in their communities.
Youth Action is a new programme from Bolsover Partnership and Bolsover District Council, coordinated by Direct Education Business Partnership (DEBP) CIO. It forms part of a long-term vision to improve the lives of children and young people across the district over the next decade.
Jonathan Tipton was a parks and open spaces officer for Bolsover District Council in 2001, when a colleague requested funding for a mobile skate park, following a huge surge in young people taking up BMX-riding and skateboarding, with no other facilities to accommodate them.
Following an initial investment of £500 for some ramps, the new addition was a huge hit.
Further funding from the government’s Single Regeneration Budget fund was allocated for the project - the first of its kind developed by a UK local authority - and the rest is history.
“That was the birth of Extreme Wheels,” says Jonathan.

A Bolsover District Councillor has been appointed into a senior role within a body which lobbies for regeneration of former coalfields and industrial areas.
Councillor John Ritchie has been appointed as Vice-Chair (Midlands and South region) of the Industrial Communities Alliance.
Cllr Ritchie, who represents Ault Hucknall on the district council and is also the local authority’s Portfolio Holder for Devolution, will play an integral role in advocating in Westminster for policies, funding, and economic regeneration tailored to industrial, mining, and manufacturing communities.
His appointment was announced during the annual general meeting of the alliance in September, as well as during a recent full council meeting of Bolsover District Council, at which Steve Fothergill, the alliance’s national director, was a guest speaker.

A resident from South Normanton has paid a £100 fixed penalty notice (FPN) for throwing a cigarette butt from their vehicle.
The littering incident was witnessed by a Bolsover District Council Enforcement Officer whilst on a patrol in Shiners Way, also South Normanton.
A Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) check was carried out to identify the registered keeper of the vehicle, following the incident on October 13, and the FPN was issued via post.
The council has a zero tolerance approach to littering and will issue an £150 (reduced to £100 on early payment) FPN to anyone who is witnessed littering.
