The Active Communities programme continues to have a positive impact across Bolsover District, helping residents stay active, build confidence and form meaningful social connections.
One of the standout sessions is the Barlborough 50+ Activity Hub, which has quickly become a popular weekly session within the community. Since launching, attendance has grown week by week, with a strong group of regular participants now attending and building friendships – with many even meeting socially outside of the sessions.
Participants have highlighted a range of benefits from attending, including:
- Improved strength, coordination and balance through regular activity
- Increased energy levels, with some choosing to walk to sessions
- Greater confidence and improved social interaction
- Opportunities to develop cognitive skills through activities such as cards and dominoes
The sessions are also supporting individuals to build confidence and independence. One participant, who began attending earlier this year with support, initially found social interaction challenging. Through regular attendance and supported engagement in activities, they have grown significantly in confidence, now taking part more independently and engaging with others in the group. Their support worker has reported a clear and positive difference in their overall wellbeing and independence.

A new walking initiative in Tibshelf is helping residents become more active, improve their wellbeing and build confidence through simple, supported outdoor activity.
The walking project has been developed to support residents who may face barriers such as low confidence, social isolation or poor mental wellbeing, providing a welcoming and accessible way to get moving outdoors.
Using local countryside routes, the sessions focus on gentle, supported group walks that encourage people to reconnect with nature, improve their physical health and build social connections. Participants are supported at a pace that suits them, helping to build confidence and independence over time.
The project has already seen positive engagement, with an initial introductory walk around Tibshelf Ponds bringing participants together in a relaxed and supportive environment. The accessible route, including seating areas and links to wider trails, ensured that people of all abilities could take part comfortably.
Following the success of the first session, the group has progressed to longer walks, demonstrating increased confidence and willingness to stay active. The long-term aim is to support participants to continue organising their own walks independently, with opportunities for volunteer training and ongoing support where required.
The initiative highlights the benefits of local, inclusive activity, supporting improvements in physical health, mental wellbeing and social connection.
