 Bolsover is bidding to become the UK’s first Town of Culture.
It has been announced by the Government that in 2028, Britain will have its first ever town of culture.
Bolsover’s bid, if successful, could bring in significant amounts of money for creative or cultural projects.
Culture isn’t new to Bolsover; the town and surrounding areas are rich in creativity and the arts. From lantern parades to artisan markets, and drama groups to a 17th century castle, Bolsover lives and breathes culture.
This year, Bolsover is celebrating 800 years of being a market town. That’s eight centuries of people coming together and it is time for Bolsover to take centre stage.
A major programme of river and millpond improvement works has begun at Pleasley Vale.
Bolsover District Council has commenced these works to enhance biodiversity, improve the historic water infrastructure, and reduce flood risk to businesses and residents on site.
Phase 2 of the works commenced early February, following on from the successful completion of phase 1, which included a significant investment in maintaining the safety and integrity of the dam wall along the River Meden.

Work is due to start on a new Derbyshire primary care centre, following agreements reached between the local NHS, two GP practices and a development company.
The centre will provide a modern and accessible space for patients of:
- Creswell and Langwith Medical Centre, in Creswell, North Derbyshire
- Crags Healthcare’s surgery at Creswell, North Derbyshire

Bolsover District Council is updating its guidance to bring it up to date and has launched a consultation to get residents’ views.
The updated Historic Environment Supplementary Planning Document has been updated with a clear, significance‑led approach, new guidance on retrofitting, setting, parks and gardens, and clearer advice on what applicants need to submit; it’s been redesigned to be practical and easy to use, and the Council is inviting feedback to make sure it genuinely helps people understand and manage change to the district’s historic places.

National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) is proposing to upgrade the electricity transmission network through the construction of a new high-voltage electricity transmission line with associated works in Derbyshire. The new 400 kV overhead line, approximately 60 kilometres (km) in length, will connect a new substation at Chesterfield area to the existing Willington Substation.
They have launched Stage 2 of their consultation and is open to anyone interested in the proposals and you are encouraged you to share your views.
