Bees are responsible for more than a third of the food we eat. They are a critical species for future generations and National Honey Bee Day is a day to recognise and celebrate the humble honey bee.
One of the best ways to help bees to thrive and survive is to plant your garden with bee-friendly plants and flowers.
Some of the best plants to choose are:
- Heather
- Lavender
- Marigold
- Grape hyacinth
- Sweet violet
- Sunflower
- Verbena

If you have ever thought about taking up the hobby of beekeeping you should take a look at the British Beekeepers Association website.
It is full if important information about how to get started and how to look after your hive once you have one.
They also have information on how to garden to help bees and how to make use of honey if you choose to extract it from the hive.

It is quite common in the summer to come across a swarm of bees somewhere outside of a hive.
If you see a cluster of bees shaped like a rugby ball, usually on a tree or a fence, you can contact a beekeeper to come and collect the swarm.
Bees are an endangered species and should not be killed for being in the wrong place.
You should be able to find a beekeeper local to you who can help.
