Twenty-one new council properties in Whitwell have been handed over to us from contractors Robert Woodhead Limited as part of our Bolsover Homes scheme.

Built on Sandy Lane and Thorpe Avenue, members of the Council and Contractors gathered on site to welcome new tenants including Pat who recently moved into a brand new bungalow.

Pat commented that the new home is: “Absolutely brilliant, I love it and I am so happy here. It is warmer, wider, bigger and more spacious. I am very impressed!”

The third annual Palterton Flower Pot Festival is now taking place in the village.

The festival runs for three-weeks until 12 June and will also coincide with the village’s Garden Party to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee on Sunday 5 June.

Local residents, school children and groups have been busy making their own fantastic flowerpot sculptures that are displayed around the village. 

You may have heard about monkeypox in the news recently. But what is it, what are the symptoms and how can you access help and information?

Monkeypox is a rare illness caused by the monkeypox virus and one of the symptoms is a rash that is sometimes confused with chickenpox. It is usually associated with travel to Central or West Africa but cases have been occurring in England with no travel links.

Monkeypox can be spread when someone comes into close contact with an infected person. The virus can enter the body through broken skin, the respiratory tract or through the eyes, nose or mouth.

A taxi driver who had a contract to transport children to and from a special school has been found guilty of using a vehicle that was not licensed to carry passengers.

Mr Hedley Flint Hill used his vehicle to pick up passengers from four locations and take them to school in Alfreton in January 2020 even it was not a licensed private hire vehicle and had no insurance.

Mr Hill plead guilty at Derby Magistrates Court and was issued with a £700 fine, £330 costs, £70 victim surcharge and six points on his licence.

Bolsover residents are being given the chance to punch their way to fitness as OZ-BOX is coming to the town.

The free sessions are being staged at Bolsover Assembly Hall from Monday 30 May.

Oz-Box is a concept that originally came into the community to help people who were involved in crime and anti-social behaviour, but it has now been opened up to the whole community from child to parent, to come and train as a family.

We have approved a new policy making it mandatory for CCTV to be used in its licensed taxis and private hire vehicles.

Councillors heard that by introducing the policy it would have the following benefits:

• deterring and preventing crime;
• reducing the fear of crime;
• assisting the police in investigating crime;
• assisting insurance companies in investigating motor vehicle accidents
