The Ladywood Estate Regeneration Newsletter
First of all, we would like to wishing residents of Ladywood and their families a Merry Christmas from everyone at the council.
We understand the start of our engagement has caused frustration for some, and we are committed to doing things differently in the future.
It's important to us that you are fully informed, involved, and at the heart of future decisions.
A step towards achieving this will be the Ladywood Resident and Community Charter Survey that we have launched today. It's the focus of this newsletter and the answers you give in this survey will be key in ensuring we can better involve you in the scheme.
With that in mind, we hope you take the time to complete it.
Tell us your views and help form the resident and community charter for Ladywood
We are now running an online survey for Ladywood residents to participate in.
The Resident and Community Charter Survey asks Ladywood residents questions that will help us to develop the Resident and Community Charter.
The charter is a document that will set out the council's offer and commitments to the residents within the Ladywood Estate Regeneration scheme area to ensure the community is treated fairly.
This document will:
-
set out how we will consult with residents, businesses and all key stakeholders on the regeneration of Ladywood
-
identify the most important issues for residents, their ideas, and aspirations for the future of Ladywood
-
outline the main opportunities arising from the regeneration project and the concerns of residents
-
ensure we fully understand how you want to be involved and communicated with
A series of 12 workshops were held in October and November 2023. The feedback from these workshops has been used to create this survey.
We want everyone to have there chance to make their voice heard. This survey gives people who were not able to attend the workshops the chance to have their say.
Your comments in this survey will help us understand if the topics and priorities shared by your neighbours in the workshops reflect the community. So please complete this survey and forward this email to anyone you know who lives in the area.
What have residents told us at the workshops?
Several workshops were set up to listen to the community. The aim was to hear what matters to Ladywood residents, areas people are concerned about, what people feel some of the solutions may be, and what people need to know more about.
Through the workshops, as well as the questions and comments you have shared with us via emails and other channels, it is clear that we need to communicate better with you.
One of the things residents told us in the workshops was that people felt they had not heard from the council directly and wanted to hear from us more regularly.
This newsletter is a small step towards addressing this issue. However, we know more needs to be done, as an email newsletter is not for everyone.
There were other requests for us to communicate more about the council's financial situation, to provide a definitive timeline of the process and for the council to acknowledge people's worries and concerns. These all issues we will address in future communications with you.
Communication was one of the key themes of feedback collected from the workshops, and it was not the only one. We look forward to providing you with a more in-depth round-up of what we have been told in workshops soon.
The Big Festive Clean Up campaign
The Big Festive Clean Up is taking place in Ladywood prior to the Christmas holiday’s so the neighbourhood can look as good as possible for the festive season.
The area outside of the St Vincent Street West shops was the first to receive a make over and tidy up as part of the campaign.
Shop keepers, local businesses and residents joined the Ladywood Regeneration Project Director David Stevenson and the Magnificent 5 (Birmingham City Council’s Street Cleaning Team) James, Austin, Paul, John and Carl in cleaning up the area before Christmas.
Work has started on tidying up the planters outside of the shops and these will receive a full makeover in the new year working in partnership with Share Shack and the Botanical Gardens.
The campaign will continue up till Christmas, and will look to tidy overgrown or rubbish strewn areas, will clear fly tipping hotspots, and work to remove graffiti.
You can join and volunteer to be part of the big pre-Christmas clear up. Residents or businesses wishing to participate can email us to take part.

What is Reset, Reshape, Restart?
Birmingham City Council has severe financial challenges which it must face and difficult decisions need to be taken. The council needs to Reset, Reshape and Restart.
A programme of improvement and change has now commenced. The first phase of this is to reset the council finances, as well as our services and how they are delivered.
We will then need to reshape our services. To do this, we will need your help. We want to hear your views about our services, what matters to you, and decide what we will have to change.
We will then put these decisions into action, to restart the council, putting the council on a footing that will benefit the city and its citizens for the long term.
To find out the latest council news including our Budget for 2024/25 and future financial proposals, make sure you sign up to receive the Birmingham Bulletin.
