The West Midlands is set to launch a new pilot project to support rough sleepers off the streets and into affordable accommodation. Based on the internationally proven ‘Housing First’ approach, the scheme provides help for vulnerable people facing homelessness in the city. 


The council and its housing partners, Wates Living Space, are celebrating after winning a prestigious national award. The partnership won ‘Outstanding Approach to Repairs and Maintenance’ at the UK Housing Awards 2018. 


A new chapter for Birmingham’s Wholesale Market has begun, as the traders’ new purpose-built home in Witton opened for business. The council has significantly invested in the new site to create a facility fit for the 21st Century. 


A review into how Birmingham’s health and social care services work together has been published by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).


If you live or work in South Birmingham, head down to Northfield’s new leisure centre which has an impressive range of facilities.

Events

British Championships


The British Athletics Championships returns to Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium on 30 June and 1 July, where more than 700 of Britain’s best athletes will compete. The event will include stars of the Commonwealth Games as they compete for places in the GB & NI team for this summer’s European Championships and Athletics World Cup.


RAF Cosford will receive the Freedom of the City of Birmingham during a special ceremony in Victoria Square on Saturday, 19 May.


Birmingham Pride, the annual LGBT festival, takes place on 26 and 27 May, featuring a carnival parade through the city centre, plus dance area, cabaret marquee, main stage, and fun fair. 


Dippy on Tour: a natural history adventure, with Dippy, The National History Museum’s famous Diplodocus, is on at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery from 26 May till 9 September.


Try Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery and local museum venues Thinktank; Aston Hall; Blakesley Hall; Sarehole Mill; and Soho House for a range of activities during half-term.


Bring the family along to the Birmingham Botanical Gardens for some fantastic half-term fun.

Birmingham tennis legend Ann Jones joined young players from Birmingham including current British Under 18’s Champion Lillian Mould from Edgbaston to look ahead to the this year’s Nature Valley Classic which is just under a month away. 


Birmingham International Dance Festival presents a vibrant programme of international dance in venues and public spaces across the city, from 1-24 June.


Concerts in the Park returns to Sutton Park on 30 June and 1 July. The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra headlines the event, performing a programme of popular classics on a dance and fiesta theme, from classic to contemporary, Strauss waltzes to Bernstein.
