Social Value opportunity - Festival of Science and Curiosity
Following the great success of last year’s events, we are pleased to announce that Bassetlaw District Council is again sponsoring 2025’s Nottinghamshire Festival of Science & Curiosity.
The programme and activities are taking place from Monday 17 February to Friday 21 February. Events will take place in Bassetlaw Museum, The Bridge Skills Hub and Inspire Libraries and so far, are supported by: the University of Sheffield: Maker Futures - pop-up makerspace, Nottingham Trent University inflatable planetarium, and the UK Atomic Energy Authority scheduling two Star Maker Screenings.
We are reaching out to our business and community stakeholder partners to offer the opportunity to get involved. This may be offering a social value interactive fun activity alongside the current programme, or simply supporting in other ways.
The festival is free and is aimed at families and children aged from 4 to 14 years old (younger and older can attend) to promote interest in STEM related subjects, career pathways and to support continued interest in future skills growth sectors.
Previous years’ events have been very well attended with stakeholders offering a fabulous array of interactive activities. If you would like more information or would like to get involved in providing an engaging activity, then please get in touch via employmentandskills@bassetlaw.gov.uk

Overview
Skills Bootcamps are an initiative funded by the Department for Education to provide free, flexible training across a variety of industries. The goal is to help fill skills and personnel gaps in industries that have had problems with these historically. The Skills Bootcamps involve local employers in aspects such as course codesign, site visits, and guest speakers to make sure that they’re kept relevant to local industry needs and are targeted at 19+ year olds that are unemployed, looking to retrain into engineering, or those looking to upskill within engineering.
EqualEngineers’ USP
One objective of the Skills Bootcamps is to increase the diversity of entering the Engineering Workforce. EqualEngineers is very strongly positioned here and has a demonstrable track record with this.
Cost
The programme is funded through the DfE, so there is no cost for employers to get involved, unless they want to send one of their current members of staff onto a Skills Bootcamp, in which case they are expected to pay a contribution to the cost.
Where are the Skills Bootcamps?
EqualEngineers will be delivering these Skills Bootcamps in Norfolk, Suffolk, Surrey, Hertfordshire, Derbyshire, and Nottinghamshire, with more locations possible to follow. Learners need to be resident in one of these areas to be eligible.
The Worksop element will be run from The Bridge Skills Hub, Worksop and start on 20 January 2025.
How can I get involved as a local engineering company?
We are looking for local employers to get involved in several different ways that have no associated financial input:
- Input in the co-design of the course to make it relevant for your company and your industry.
- Participate in site visits / placements for the learners, or as guest speakers as part of the Skills Bootcamps.
- Help us to achieve our target in having 100% of our learners who complete the Skills Bootcamp be guaranteed an interview at the end of the process (no commitment to hire the learner).
- Provide staff to help mentor the learners through the process one-on-one.
Sheffield Hallam University (SHU) are inviting businesses to the Let's Talk Degree Apprenticeships event during National Apprenticeship Week 2025. The event is for employers who are new to degree apprenticeships and would like to find out more about the opportunities they present, to upskill existing members of an organisation or as an option to consider when expanding your workforce.
Hear from the Employer Partnerships Team as well as regional employers who have successfully incorporated degree apprenticeship programmes into their business.
The team will be on hand to offer advice and guidance on:
- How to identify the right programme for your business
- Ways to attract the right learner (including our free recruitment support service)
- The onboarding process, course delivery and assessment
- The support provided to learners on our programmes
With a range of Degree Apprenticeship Programmes in areas such as:
- Accounting and Finance
- Architecture and Chartered Planning
- Construction and Chartered Surveying
- Digital and Technology Solutions
- Design and Creative
- Engineering
- Food and Drink
- Health and Social Care
- Leadership and Management

The full range of higher and degree apprenticeships can be viewed on the SHU website.
