STEP - Glimpse into the future
Earlier this week, we got a small glimpse into the future of STEP.
The STEP programme will build the UK’s prototype fusion energy plant at West Burton near Retford.
An event held in Gainsborough, provided the opportunity to learn more about what is coming next, as well as getting a first look at the inspirational new STEP branding which embodies the mission to fusion.
If you haven’t heard of the STEP programme yet, this inspiring video will tell you everything you need to know and shows why we’re really excited for it to be built right here in Bassetlaw.

The World's first Fusion Cafe opens in Worksop this Autumn
The world’s first Fusion Energy Café opens this Autumn to welcome residents from Bassetlaw. The café is housed in The Bridge Skills Hub in central Worksop and uses funding from Bassetlaw District Council, North Notts BID, and the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) to develop the necessary facilities, infrastructure, and skills to support a thriving fusion energy sector in the UK.
The Fusion Energy Café will offer scrummy refreshments, and will be available for community event bookings. The café’s interior – resembling the inside of a tokamak, a machine used in the creation of fusion plasmas – and its menu are inspired by the promise that fusion can be an environmentally responsible part of the world’s future energy supply.
The Fusion Energy Café’s aim is to actively engage the Worksop and Nottinghamshire local communities in fusion energy and technical training, particularly as West Burton, Nottinghamshire, has been selected as the home for STEP (Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production) – the UK’s prototype fusion energy plant.
This community-focused initiative will support students in apprenticeships, higher education, or return-to-work programmes at The Bridge. Its aim is to equip local people with the skills, knowledge, and aspirations to contribute to the broader fusion energy sector.
Bassetlaw District Council Chief Executive, David Armiger said:
“This exciting collaboration will bring the process of fusion energy closer to our communities and help to inspire a generation of young people who could one day, work at the prototype fusion energy plant at West Burton or across wider STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Industries”.
Fusion energy promises to be a safe, low carbon and sustainable part of the world’s future energy supply. It could be transformative for energy security and important in the fight against climate change. The Fusion Energy Café will feature digital displays, guest talks, and various events showcasing that a career in fusion is both rewarding and a viable long-term option.
