Bassetlaw District Council will no longer accept requests to install log burners in its properties due to safety concerns and an ambition to reduce carbon emissions from solid fuel and wood burning stoves.
Due to an increase in the number of requests it has received, the Council has taken this decision based on a number of factors that include the Government reducing the amount of smoke new stoves can emit per hour from 5g to 3g, in areas classed as ‘smoke control areas’.
The Council is also seeking to reduce the amount of carbon emissions that its properties are responsible for, which includes phasing out solid fuel and wood burning appliances where possible.
The safety of its tenants is also one of the main factors and the amount of carbon monoxide released from solid fuel appliances is more than 20 times that of gas. Therefore, the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning is greatly increased.
There are also increased fire risks due to hot embers escaping the stoves when the door is opened, as well as combustible materials being stored at properties.
Tenants who have already sought permission and have installed wood burning stoves will be unaffected for now. However, you should inform the Council’s repairs team so that we can add your appliance to our annual servicing schedule to ensure it is safe to use. You can call us on 0800 590 542.
Should the Council identify any properties where a log burner has been installed without permission, this will be removed.
The decision was approved by Cabinet as part of the Council’s Annual Compliance Review.
