 Retford Market Consultation
Proposals to invest more than £400,000 in Retford’s market are being put forward by Bassetlaw District Council as it seeks to modernise its approach, broaden its appeal and protect the future of the town’s historic market.
Traditionally held on a Thursday, Friday and Saturday, the markets have been a significant part of Retford’s heritage since King Henry III granted its first charter in 1246. The Council is now taking action in order to safeguard this legacy and ensure that the market retains this tradition, and is financially viable for many years to come.
The Council is now asking the public, market traders, local businesses and local stakeholders for their views on two proposals that could create a semi-permanent market, and provide additional trading opportunities through the historic Buttermarket, located in Retford Town Hall. This will take place as part of a six-week consultation, which runs from Friday 17th November until Tuesday 2nd January 2024.

Visitors to Worksop and Retford will be able to take advantage of free afternoon parking again this year in all Bassetlaw District Council Car Parks (including the Priory Centre in Worksop) in the run up to Christmas and New Year.
Parking will be free after 2pm each day from Friday 1st December 2023 to Monday 1st January 2024 as the Council looks to encourage more people to shop local and support our town centre businesses.
Parking will also be free in the Council’s Worksop Car Parks (including the Priory Centre) on Saturday 25th November for the Christmas Lights Switch On. There are no parking charges in Council Car Parks on Sundays so the Retford Christmas Market and Lights Switch-On taking place on Sunday 26th November will also have free parking.
Cllr Alan Rhodes, Cabinet Member for Corporate & Financial Services said:
“We are offering free parking from 2pm throughout December to support traders and businesses in our town centres. This year we are also able to extend the scheme to the Priory Centre in Worksop and ensure that the Christmas Lights Switch Ons will benefit from free parking as well. I hope this will encourage people to shop local and support our town centre businesses.”

A targeted investment in improving public safety in Worksop has helped drive significant reductions in neighbourhood crime, antisocial behaviour and violence against women and girls.
It follows a £300,000 package of Safer Streets measures including employing a team of street wardens to provide a high-visibility public presence, the installation of new street lighting and the provision of drink testing kits and training for people working in the night-time economy to prevent violence against women and girls.
Combined with the continuing hard work Bassetlaw District Council’s antisocial behaviour team and Nottinghamshire Police officers, it has led to a 76% reduction in house burglary, 53% drop in vehicle offences, a 40% fall in violence against women and girls in public spaces, a 16% drop in robbery and an 11% reduction in antisocial behaviour.

The 34-year-old was handed a four-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, when he appeared at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on 23 October 2023.
