CCTV Refuge Points Installed in Worksop
A network of pioneering CCTV Refuge Points has been set up across Worksop whereby members of the public, especially women and girls, can instantly alert CCTV Control Room staff when they feel threatened or at risk; calls can then be relayed to the Police Control Room if the caller is deemed to be at risk.
CCTV Refuge Points provide 24-7 surveillance of an area like standard CCTV but have the additional advantage of offering users a ‘panic button' feature whereby they can automatically alert Police to a live incident.
They have been funded as part of a multiagency effort to make women and girls safer and reduce their risk of crime and violence through the Home Office's Safer Streets 3 project.
Cllr Julie Leigh, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods at Bassetlaw District Council, said: "The Safer Streets project is ground-breaking in its approach and aims to improve the safety of people in and around Worksop town centre, primarily among women and girls.
"We are proud to be part of this initiative and the ways that we are using the latest technology to give women and girls greater confidence on our streets.
"For many women and girls, making the most routine journeys for work, socialising or exercise can sometimes be a challenging and uncertain experience. We hope that these refuge cameras give everyone more confidence on our streets and also act as a deterrent to crime and anti-social behaviour."

Council Leader's Update - Cllr Simon Greaves
As mentioned above, it is great that one of the biggest sporting events in Great Britain will be linked with Bassetlaw again with the Tour of Britain including our district. Whether you are a fan of cycling or new to the sport, the spectacle of around 120 cyclists, and the entourage of the team’s support vehicles in hot pursuit, is one not to be missed.
Over the last few weeks there has been a lot going on behind the scenes to strengthen our bid to bring the UK’s first commercially operating fusion power plant – the Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (STEP) to West Burton.
Bassetlaw has a proud history of energy generation, access to skills and a strong supply chain in place. It offers the ideal location and the perfect opportunity to provide jobs and energy for generations to come.
Representatives from across the midlands have met in Parliament over the last month to show their support for the project and as a partnership we will be doing everything we can to put West Burton ahead of the other four proposed sites.
Finally, the half-term holidays are in full swing and if you are staying closer to home rather than braving the queues at the airports, there are lots of things going on to keep the kids entertained. Bassetlaw Museum is hosting loads of Easter themed activities, you can have a day out in one of our award-winning parks, or you can follow the North Notts Nectar Trail which was unveiled last weekend. If you haven’t see it already, there are 30 individually designed bees located around the district. Download the app and discover them for yourself.

Bassetlaw District Council is consulting residents and businesses on introducing new Public Space Protection Orders to cover Worksop and Retford Town Centres for three years until 16 June 2025.
Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs) are one of the tools that Councils can use to help tackle anti-social behaviour locally. PSPOs are aimed at ensuring public spaces can be enjoyed free from anti-social behaviour. They allow Councils to set an area where things such as drinking alcohol on the street, or causing nuisance, harassment, alarm and distress can be banned.
Breaching the order is a criminal offence and it allows the Police or Council to issue a Fixed Penalty Notice of £100. However, should the matter be taken to court and following a successful conviction, magistrates have the power to order the offender to pay a fine of up to £1,000.
The Council is proposing new PSPOs to replace those that were originally introduced to Worksop and Retford Town Centres in June 2016 and extended again in 2019.
