Bassetlaw residents that breed and sell dogs are being encouraged to check if they need an animal activity license as the increased demand for dogs throughout the Covid-19 pandemic has led to a rise in unlicensed breeders.
In England, you are required to have a license if you:
- Run a business that breeds and advertises dogs for sale (this includes using online services such as Facebook Marketplace and Gumtree)
- Breed more than two litters within a year and sell any of the puppies
- Make a profit of more than £1000 on any number of litters (this also triggers the requirement to submit a self-assessment tax return to HMRC)
Any person or business found to breed and sell dogs without a license could get an unlimited fine or go to prison for up to six months. Breeders with an animal activity license are subject to inspections and conditions that ensure the safety and welfare of the animals in their care. If a dog breeder fails to comply with the conditions on their license, they could also receive an unlimited fine.
If you feel that you have encountered an unlicensed puppy dealer or a puppy farm, you can report it to Bassetlaw District Council’s Licensing Team on 01909 533 533.

Wampanoag Nation Welcomed to Bassetlaw
Bassetlaw Museum presented a new side to the well-known story of the Mayflower Pilgrims during a unique cultural exchange in which representatives from the Wampanoag Nation were welcomed to Bassetlaw. The Wampanoag Perspective Project explores the culture, perspective and history of the Wampanoag Tribe, and their shared history with the Pilgrims.
Steven Peters, Hartman Deetz, Mark Harding and Troy Currence constructed a wetu (traditional Native American dwelling) on the grounds of the Museum, where it will remain as a learning resource for future visitors. Over the course of the week, over 600 children from 14 schools across Bassetlaw came to the Museum to learn about the Wampanoag perspective through dedicated educational sessions.

West Burton A, near Retford in Bassetlaw, has made the UKAEA’s reserve list to be the potential future home of the UK’s prototype fusion energy plant – the Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production, or “STEP”.
Although the site didn’t make the final shortlist, it will be brought into the process by the end of this year if any of the five sites fall out of the process.
Leader of Bassetlaw District Council, Cllr Simon Greaves said:
“It is very disappointing that West Burton A hasn’t made the actual shortlist, but the fact it is on the reserve list recognises the great potential for the site. We will continue to work hard with EDF and our partners at the County Council to secure a sustainable long term use for this site, along with the other coal fired power station sites in the District.”
